Hmmmmm

If I remember correctly I think there is some adjustment at the latch points on the body of the car. You might even have to remove a cover or 2 for access to the latch point on both front & rear of the body. Seems like there might even be more than one size pin that goes into the body, you might compare yours. Its been about 10 years since I had a 3rd gen with t-tops.

Are they hook-latch? I can't remember what years were what right now. If they're small-pin and you need to go to large-pin, you should be able to put the plastic bullet shape on the metal rod. I had a similar 'problem'. By doing that, they lock in nice and tight now.

You can open them up and swap the pin/hook and handle mechanism. I did this to go from non-locking to locking tops. I'll try going step-by-step here. Note: both of mine were glass, but i'm assuming that the general construction is the same.

1-remove the handle (held by 1 screw)
2-remove the plastic trim piece (3 or 4 screws)
3- remove the 2 screws that hold the rubber part of the weather stripping down.
4- the hard part.... remove the rubber part from it's metal track without tearing it.
5- Mark the location of the metal track (learn from my mistake! this will assure that the seal lines back up with the window glass the same as it did before)
6- remove the metal track (3 or 4 screws)
7- there are 2 or 3 large screws or bolts that hold the lock and pin mechanism that will now be exposed.
8- remove the hook setup and replace with the pin setup.

Of course, reverse the order to put it back together. the hardest part by far is working the rubber seal back into the metal track. make sure that it's all the way down... a thin flat head screwdriver or scraper might help to get it into the grooves in the track.

okay i just reread your post and i might have given you info you didn't need. if they are the same style latch, take off the plastic trim pieces that cover the holes that the pins go into. The hole for the pin should be exposed now. loosen the two screws on either side and adjust as needed to get the pins to fit correctly... then tighen into place and you're done.
