"Chirping" noise over bumps??
Hey guys,
In the rattle and squeak Department:
Every midsize GM car I've ever owned has a funny noise that sounds like it's coming from the bottom center of the windshield.
Hard to describe a noise, but it's kind of a cowl shake or a chirp.
I know in my heart that 75+% of you hear this same noise when going over bumps. I had a ****load of Monte's, Cutlasses, and Grand Prix's in the 80's that made the exact same noise. It can't be "just my car".
Anybody know what this noise is and how to deal with it??/

i think it was a rubber bumper worn through on the montes and cutlasses that caused the hood to squeak sounding like it was from the cowl/dashboard area
check the end (closest to windshield) for any sign of rubbing and while you're at it throw some white lithium grease on the hinges and see if that helps

Thanks, Andy!
Y'know, that's exactly what it sounds like. I will take a good look.
Is the rubber piece you're talking about mounted to the hood or the cowl?

it's mounted to the cowl on the monte's but i don't know for sure on camaro's or firebirds but if you find any rubber (that's not rubbed through) there put a little vasaline on and see what happens, if you find any possible metal to metal contact points put a peice of duct tape on it and take it for a ride to see if you "fixed" it then maybe search for a more permanent solution that is of course if you don't want your friends to make fun of your duct tape ride

My 86 Olds 442 had that squeak. I fixed it by adjusting the center hood support at the windshield and applying grease to it. The Fbodies don't have that bumper stop though.

I agree with badandy247. If I had a pic to show you I would. Im at school so I cant really do much. My 87 TA had an awful squeak. You could hear it outside the car as much as inside. Made it seem like a piece. Also...made the car seem like such a rattle box over bumps. If you lift the hood, back by the hinges, there should be a bolt with a rubber cap on it. Thats a hood stop for the hinge. Mine was completely rubbed through. I zip tied a piece of thin rubber I had laying around the garage and it was like a miracle. The car seems completely different. Quiet and more solid sounding. I know it seems like such a small thing and such an easy fix, but for me it made a wold of difference. If you look, you'll see it....cant miss it. Another spot is the underside of the dash pad. The glaze that is under there will squeak against ANYTHING that rubs it. Even your finger will cause a heck of a squeal if you drag it across. I cut up an old rag into sections and 3M adhesived it all over the underside of the dash. I have pics of that at home. Did a real nice job of quieting the whole dash/cowl area. Only problem is...now I hear all the rattles and sqeaks in the rear of the car... Happy sqeak hunting!

Nice advise ghettocruiser, will take the pad off and ddo the same and look for those nuts.
Another thing you might try is to adjust the rubber bump stps at the front of the engione bay which the front of the hood rest on. By unscrewing them slightly thus raising the front of the hood eliminated one of the worst squeeks I had (real metal to metal. Worth a look!
Cheers,
Felix
