Hatch pulldown problem
Alright here is the deal. My hatch motor continually runs even though the hatch seems to be down. This was a problem that happened last winter and due to cold weather and lack of time I just pulled the power wire off of the unit from the inside. Now I have read previous articles about some type of plastic screw being stripped and I am wondering if that is the case. I really dont want to buy the whole setup when I can possibly just fix the problem. If anyone has had the same problem, or can direct me to another thread that I havent sceen that answers the problem I would most appreciate it.

Your gear nut is most likely stripped, as is mine, except mine's stuck in the "up" position. Go out to the dealer's and buy a new gear nut, GM P/N 20160587, which will probably cost you like $12 shipped to the dealers, or on GMPartsDirect.com, it costs $3.50 or so without shipping, or you could go to TDS and order theirs, but theirs is by far the most expensive, but they are all the same nylon and will wear out after a while because they are operated by metal gears and the grease isn't really compatible with the material the gear nut is made of. You might get one and see how much it will cost to have a metalworking shop make you a metal one or something. That has to be better than NYLON....

Better yet, go to your local bone yard and get one out of a early '90's Caddy. Thier hood is only about 20lbs while ours are about 65lbs. (Anyone ever weigh one of these puppies?)
I got about four of them in great condition from the bone yard. $2.00 total. The gears look absolutely new. Put a different grease on the gear and you should be good to go.

I'll take one of those gears--- Mine's stuck in the up position like I said and it hurts the fuel economy becuase I have to run the heat most of the time in the winter becuase air runs right out the gap in between the hatch and the weatherstripping...
Oh, and Rupert, there's directions on how to repair the unit in the Tech Articles page at Thirdgen.org.

PM me if you need one and I'll see what I can get out of the bone yard in a day or two. Hell, I'll just grab one or two. Send me your address and I can get it to you in a couple of days.
