I know it can be done...

I have seen some of you guys paint the ENTIRE car with spray paint before... and it actually looked good, i even saw a local guy that had done his whole car with just small cans of spray paint... and it looked smooth and very even...

The thing is that i am leaving for the Air Force (don't know exactly when yet) but i would really like to finish the car the best that i can before then since it will be sitting in a garage for the next few years... then again... i would like to get to drive it when it's all ONE color before i leave... but i don't feel like paying for a paint job i will use once or twice... anyways... i am just putting this out there... anyone here had any experiences with doing this entirely cray and absurd thing? I know that i can do it.... i am just wondering if it would be worth the time... i don't want to go back in a few weeks and get the whole car re-painted... i dunno... i am just thinking about it i guess... any ideas would be appreciated.... thanks...

if you're good at spraypainting, it can be done. I'm not gonna get into the whole process, because I know it already on the site somewhere, but here's a few tips:

First, use a light, bright color. They're so much easier to get to look smooth and even.

Also, that engine paint that they sell at Autozone works REALLY good. That stuff like never runs, and always goes on smooth

And, I've never clearcoated a whole car after spraypainting it, so I'm not speaking from experience here, but I did my headlight buckets today, and after you spray on a few coats of color, put a few of clear, then hit it with rubbing compound. makes it shine like a real paintjob.

Yeah, so bascially, like everyone else will tell you, It's all in the prepwork. Sand the whole car down 'till it's nice and smooth, and just take your time.

earl schieb $99 dollar special it'll cost half that in spray paint and much easier to have them do it you'll also be able to recoup the $ if you sell it

91Zconvt is right - the engine paint at autozone is the madnote

i got a full set of gta wheels for almost nothing bc they were neglected and faded. I took a day and sanded the aluminum ring all the way up to 2000 grit, then used mother's billet polish. i taped it off and sprayed the wheel centers with autozone high temp engine paint. GLOSS black ... make sure it says gloss on the can or you're f*ck*d. they came out looking sooooooo nice, the gloss is really rich on that paint. and like he said - it does NOT run

warning... if you spray paint the car then wants a good, professional one, you will need to sand the whole car again AND seal it... since spray can paint is a cheap paint and it never really hardens.. so the moment you use solvents on it, it'll be ruined... if you like your car and are serious about keeping it clean... please invest in a real paint job.. or at least bu tthe car on primer... but not canned primer... real one...

yeah... i have decided to go ahead and just primer the car myself and take it to a shop and have them paint it and clear coat it... i got some quotes from a few shops and the prices are a lot better when i do the prep work myself...

just be sure not to use primer in spray can... because the primer in spray can has the same problem has the spray can paint.. it never hardens

for the love of *** listen to irhal if you shoot can primer on there the painter will spend twice as much time stripping it off and charge you alot more, we had to do it to a kids car not long ago at our shop, it was a big a$$ messand cost him alot more for the job.
