what the heck is this?
I tore out the rear carpet sectiony to steam clean and in the well of the hatch theres....well....an aluminum door. With a little latch and a couple flanges....The heck is this?? it's not insulated well....It was glued over, without the glue there's rather large holes. Is this here to serve any purpose? Also, up above the gas tank (where the T-tops sit) theres 2 little concave circles that were also glued over....dunno what those are either
Anyone know? The door thing, i think i might just weld a square sheet over.

The door is down in the opening and not over the gas tank? I have heard of people cutting at door back there so they would have easy access to the fuel pump but that would be up where the t-tops sit not down int he well. It could be for something to do with the fuel system but not really sure.

the two little circles are i think something to do with the tank...but the door thing, it's down in the bottom of the well. It's just a square hole cut through the floor with a little aluminum plate popped into it. I can't imagine what kind of option i dont have it could be there for...it just confuses me
I think rather then sticking a bunch of silicone over it i'll just weld it, but it'd be just my luck to do that and find out i need it for some really wierd reason later.

Maybe that section of sheetmetal rotted out at one point and they just cut the rotted section and put the aluminum in. If the rear hatch seal goes bad all the water that leaks ends up ender that rubberized section of carpet in the back where it can't evaporate very easily. I've had quite a few carpets out, and I've never seen the aluminum square, so it's prolly just a repair

You option code WTF.
It serves no real purpose but to confuse you.
Hmm, I dunno if I understand correctly what you described.
But in my car, there was a tiny little hole that I imagine was for drainage issues, maybe someone just welded a piece of metal under that.

Im pretty sure those are put there from the factory. So that when the cars sell gets primer dipped the paint will flow out of the car.

heh it's not for a stash:P it's just a little pop out plate in the well, below it is the ground. I think mylilbowtie is right. It -looks- like a factory job not a repair, it has little....indents...that slope down into it, like it's for drainage. I've just never seen it before...And the draining thing didnt make sense because the top didnt rust (it's not actually aluminum, the bottom is all rusted) because they glued the carpet to it, so it was watertight from the glue. But for paint/primer draining, i'm thinking that was it.

Actually this is a really rare option that only came on cars that were to be exported to the British government Spec. Ops. Divsion.

The other day I removed all my rear interior and I think I found the same thing your talking about. Heres a pic, the insulation from the carpet is stuck onto it and my paints all bubbled from moisture

heh yup that's it. I scraped that orange glue off mine that's holding the carpet down. As you can see it isnt doing much draining NOW because it's water-tight....That orange glue sucks

Shoot! And there for a second I thought there was a glimpse of light perhaps to make changing a fuel pump easier! I can't believe they didn't give us an access door!!

If you pull the carpet out of the passenger compartment you will find four (4) more of those little doors located at the low points in the front and rear seat. They were used as drain points when the vehicles were dipped at manufacture and then sealed and used as attach points to hold the carpet in place when it was installed.

all cars have them. my moms grand prix has it along with the family minvan and my dads taurus. Even a friends CRX that I was helping him remove some sound deading. Jeep wranglers have actual drain plugs though so you can unplug then and hose out the inside and it all drains out then. cool huh!
