Rebuilding seats

Hi

I've got hold of a set of the open headrest PMD seats found in the early third gen Trans Ams. I intend to buy some new covers from Hawkes and fit them in my car. The problem I have is that some of the foam - especially on the drivers seat base is torn up with bits missing. Does anyone know of the best way to rebuild seats and retain the original shape in the padding? Can you buy new foam and carve out the required shape, or can I somehow restore the padding that I already have?

I intend to go to the library and get a book on car upholstery restoration, but any hints people here have would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Pete

Any reputable seat upholsterer(SP?)can do it right. If the foam isn't available I've heard they can trim up one that closely matches what you have, as long as you have some good pieces that they can measure from. might cost you a few $$ tho.

I don't know if it works or not, but I heard about using foam in a can and sand it down to shape.

If you did that won't the foam be too hard to sit on or too brittle?
