Roof Console
Im thinking about buying one for my 86 T/A that did NOT come with the feature of the roof console. So does it already have the mounting holes for a roof console? And do I have to add any wiring? I do have a dome light though. How hard is it to install? Could someone maybe give me a list of directions on how to install a roof console for an 86 T/A with T-Tops. Thanks.

i put one into my car a couple months ago, it's not difficult at all. Yes, your car should already have the mounting holes (my 84 did so I assume they all do....) just make sure you get all the screws you need with the console,(2 front, 2 back) finding the right sized ones might be difficult so try and get the originals.
Basically, you just have to cut your headliner where the screws go in and put it in. I guess you could hold it up there and draw a light line around it, then take it off and cut like 1/2" or so inside of it. By the way, to put it in, you slide it forward into the screws on the front, then screw in the rear end. As far as the dome light goes you should be able to just use your existing wiring but I had my friend do that part for me cuz I'm not real good with electrical stuff.
Most of the ones I've come across are missing the flash light that comes with it, so if youre's came with one you made a good find. Well good luck with your project.

I installed one on my old 90 bird. Mine also had the mounting holes. And you can use the wiring from the dome light. Just splice it in and ground it. Very simple and worth while project.
Good luck

I also installed one in my 86 IROC, Looks alt ot better then the plain old dome light. It was a real easy hook up, just make sure you get the original screws that the console goes into. Mine also already had the holes in there.

Just finished installing one when I redid my headliner on my 85 TA. The holes were already there, all I had to do was cut the headliner board.
If you can get the wiring harness with it when you find one, it will be easier. The electrical connector is different where it connects into the overhead console, but the connector that plugs into the car's main harness under the dash is the same. If you plan on removing the headliner to do this project, just remove the driver's A-pillar, and the dash pad and you can easily replace the entire harness. The plug is under the dash pad on the driver's side. Otherwise you will need to splice into the existing dome light wiring.
Also be sure to get all 4 of the mounting screws if you can, but if you don't, you can easily make some. I only had 2, so I had to fab up the other 2. Sheet metal screw, aluminum tubing of the right diameter, and a thick washer, and you can easily replicate the shape of the original screw.
When you get your console, make sure that you get the right on, hardtop and t-top use different ones.
And one last piece of advise, plug the console in and fully test all the lights before installing it. Got mine in, and the dome light won't turn off. Bad switch. Have an extra switch, but got to pull it back out and replace the switch.
Overall, it is a fairly easy project, and gives the interior a much better look. And by the way, there is a tech article with some pretty good instructions here https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...dconsole.shtml
Good luck with your project!
