4th gen console... Camaro using firebird pod

OK. This needs to be more documented... This is my attempt to obtain the information.

I have seen pics of the 3RDGEN Firebird radio pod used in the 3rdGen Camaro's when installing a 4THGEN center console.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THIS SWAP?

I measured the width of the Firebird pod and it is just a TINY bit wider than the Camaro... What needs to be modified?

HELP!

I just bought a 4thGen console and REALLY want to use a Firebird radio pod!

It would involve some drilling I would think. You wouldn't have the provisions for the pod on your dash. There are two screw holes fixed to a bracket built into the dash. Then on the transmission tunnel below that point on the dash there is a single threaded bolt that comes through. On the bottom of the radio pod there is a bracket that is slightly adjustable for some odd reason. This attaches to the bottom bolt on the tunnel and then two bolts hold it to the dash.

So in any case your going to have to make something for it to mount to. I don't know that you could just bolt it to drilled holes in the dash. I don't know if they are strong enough. Hope this helps.

I found my console today and am going to attempt the Firebird radio pod as part of the install.

I am GOING to make a tech article on it too. Would it be of benefit to anyone?? I have a digital camera and will take LOTS of pictures!

To mods or those in charge, if I wrote up a step-by-step article, would you post it in the Tech Articles section?

I think that would be a great tech article to post. So many people on this site are asking how to do this particular installation. I for one am very interested. Thanks for the work that could help so many others. Persuasion enough?

If you wrote it well and had some very detailed pics, I would see that it gets put up. At first, it might just be a sticky at the top of this board, but it would make it to the tech article section.

Let me know how it goes so I can review it. This topic comes up too often, so this would be a good thing.

Ok. As long as its of use to others, I'll write one up, complete with pics.

It'll be about 2 weeks thought as I am waiting for the parts.

I am having the same problem, but mine is a little different. All the pics I see are of like 85, 0r 86 Camaro's with the old style dash. I have a 92 and am trying to make this damn pod work with this damn 2000 Console!!!!!! I am also going to rotate my pod 180 degrees so the radio can be on top and the HVAC controls will be on the bottom. Seeing that I drive a 5 spd, When I am in 1st, 3rd, or 5th, my radio buttons are kinda hard to control. But first I want to see if I can make it fit the correct way first. A few simple pics of a 91 or 92 CAMARO with a 2000 console and a 3rd gen firebird would help me out a WHOLE HELLA LOT!!!!!!

BTW, I have searched the **** out of this site and cannot seem to find the pics with the correct combination described above!!!

Thanks Guys!!!!!!!

Thats RamAirZ's car, he hasn't posted here in awhile... but he is a good guy and I am sure he would help you out. Try PMing him or post over at fl-thirdgen.org he is on there a lot. Too bad he wrecked his car, but have no fear he already bought a replacement to transfer the parts onto. Good luck!

Maybe I'm missing something, but what is different as far as the console/radio pod area goes for the 90-92 vs. the 82-89?

AFAIK, its the same damn thing, just different guages and such.

Trust me dude...the bottom of the dash is slightly different due to the fact the way the dash is configured. How about you let the helpful people on this wonderful site help me instead of posting a somewhat negative post.

Thanks anyways though!

Thanks Bitchin! Throw some of his pics this way if you have any!!!

Maybe someone here didn't do so well in English class, but there was nothing negative in the last post.

As for helpful, I was trying to be.

Why don't you just use the stock radio......

The Firebird radio pod looks kind out of place to me....

dante,

since you drive a mid eighties iroc, you do not understand the difference in the two different types of dashes...ok sweety

Bitchin,

I looked at RamAirZ's ride, and even though it is a nice car.....his car has the older type dash in it......Mine is of the 91-92 ytpe dash...... anyone help me out there.....

flyin,

Can I be honest....I really have looked long and hard at your car and I really think it lacks good craftsmanship...I mean it really looks pieced together...... I would rather bolt in a radio pod, than cut up my console and cover it with carpet to hide the saw marks... this is just my opinion and not a shot at your manhood so don't get bent out of shape.......

Ok guys,

Lets keep it clean and not start a flame war or bashing others. I would like to see this thread kept open so people can get some questions answered. There are way too many threads about center consoles on the boards.

Once again, keep it civil...................

Agreed- As soon as I get the parts, I'll have a tech article made up for '82-'89 dashes.

Should be out late next week. I'm waiting for parts to come in. I'll try to make it as adaptable for the 90-92 dash as possible.

i like the way that looks a lot more than the firebird unit with the camaro dash. maybe would look good covered in vinyl or something close to the console instead of carpeted, but it still doesnt look bad the way it is.

I agree. That's why most of us have gone to the 85-92 radio/AC pod. But I stillllllll cannot get mine to fit. Well dante is working on an article, and you know two heads are better..........

Nope, I don't have a heater, and i didn't want to fab anything up because i barely use my A/C

Not much room to work with back there......

You guys are right in the fact that the 4th Gen console mod doesn't look stock, it could be made to look stock, if you covering the radio pod and then the bottom of the 4th Gen console with the same material....

Then again the top part is boxy and the bottom part of the console is curvy...

As an FYI - I should be getting my console VIA UPS tomorrow. Which means, Friday night I'll start my installation/tech article.

Hopefully by Sunday night we'll have another tech article to add to the list.

For what it's worth... just gotta pardon the lack of "bling." Everything is dull b/c I havent put any stuff on it in months. ...and it's dirty
The driver's side lines up on mine (noticed on a lot of pics Ive seen here.. they dont line up with the firebird pods). Had to drill another set of holes and use some screws to hold the pod in place. The firebird pod faceplate is buffed smooth and has no squares. The hatch switch is where the defroster switch was in the upper dash. The window switches are in the ashtray hole thing... the sides line up and the door closes. The shifter is cut almost 2 inches... but the skull shifter sits really high. I had a firebird shifter on it and it was almost an inch lower than it's sitting right now. Still unsure on what to do about the top. Made a piece out of the top piece from an old Camaro console, but IMO it looks like ***. Doesn't fit correctly. *shrug* ...and I need to cover the sides of the pod with some leather stuff I got that matches nicely, but not before the top situation is figured out.

ttt any updates ? I am putting a 98 camaro (stick) console into my 1989 IROC-Z . Got to love the cup holder

.... I am still reading my search results ....but this thread looks like the title that suites my situation

These " pods" from a firebird , what year are they in ?
i am not worried about mounting the switches . I am concerned about the heater controlls ....are do they swap ...like butter ?

I hope this article goes well as I am doing the swap in the summer ..... blindly

The tech article is somewhat on hold. I got my console a few months back, installed it, but without a radio pod. I never did find one that I liked in the local yards.

A quick question to anyone that might know. Were any of the firebird radio pods black? I've seen some that look black, but did they come from the factory that way? If so, I need to narrow my searches.

i havent measured it, but its going to interfer when you fold down your rear seat. its not a big deal to me, but the back of the seat when folded down will cover some of the rear cupholders......
LMK if i can help further.
