My car always rattles them lose where it bolts to the door, I have to pull the door panel, roll down the window, and just go in with a open end wrench from the top, But to keep from doing this use some loc tite, blue should be strong enough. no more lose mirrors.

There are three mounts with phillips head screws. You'll never get to the one on the bottom unless you can unsnap the mirror from its mount on the power pivot assembly. I can get you some digital photos if you really need them...

There are several things that can cause the mirrors to rattle.
1) As already mentioned, there is a cast pot-metal bracket that attaches the motor to the housing. This could be loose if the screws are loose. Or that cast bracket could be broken. In that case you'd have to replace it.
2) On later-style electric mirrors there is a cross-shaped piece that attaches the back of the mirror to the motor. Sometimes that piece comes free and needs to be popped back into the molded plastic mirror backing. If you have this style you can cover the mirror with a towel and carefully press it back onto the cross-shaped piece.
3) Early-style mirrors had a screw holding the plastic mirror backing piece to the motor. To replace the mirror on these you have to break the glass to get to the screw. Large auto parts chains sell replacement mirrors for a lot less than the dealer. I've found the "Objects in the mirror..." etched on the passenger side mirrors was a bit fuzzier than a new GM piece though.
4) The motor screws to that pot-metal bracket. Sometimes those screws can vibrate loose.
I forgot to mention to use safety glasses, hammer and gloves if you have to break that mirror to get to the screw.
Good luck, Lon

loose mirror
I just noticed today that the passenger side housing on my 90 is loose. Does it tighten from inside the door or out side under the mirror? Thanks

The houseing on mine isnt loose its the mirror it self. So i wul dhave to brake the glass and replace it to tighten it??? Also how many peoples driver side rearview say objects in mirror are closer then they appear mine does not say that at all mirror.

What year is your RS? You can power the mirror to the extreme lower position and look in from the top to see if there is a cross piece in there. Assuming the part it snaps into on the back of the plastic mirror backing hasn't broken, then you can carefully just pop it back into place. The motor switched in either 88 or 89.
