I would start by stripping out the car, int, anything on the body that can be removed, fenders, bumpers, rear hatch, impact absorber bars. If you want you could remove the doors, to check for any rust under the hinge brackets. Once you have it down to a "shell" start from the bottom and work your way up to the top of the car. I would por-15 the entire under body and maybe some of the joints in the interior as well.
Check for any rust and get rid of it.
You can still put gfx and call it a berlinetta, just have custom emblems made for the gfx and rear bumper. Dont put on Z28 stickers.
Check out my targa thread thats half way down this board. Basically you want to strip your car down to that.

I'm doing excactly the same thing. My best advice to you is label EVERY last nut and bolt in plastic bags etc. Also take as many pictures as you can of every part of the car.Trust me you'll be glad you did.If you're like me you can't remember what you did last week let alone last year.By the way, once you start renewing stuff it turns into a complete resto. My "quick engine rebuild and paint blowover" has mutated into a "replace anything if it looks remotely used" project!Good luck I hope it goes well.

You want to cut out the t'bar, to make it into a targa top. You will need to at least have subframe connectors installed prior to cutting the bar out. Also be prepared to do alot of custom fabrication to make the top, or shell out a lotta molla.

Sphon makes some, alston, ect. Try searching for subframe connectors.
I'm going to make my own custom frame, it will be stronger than subs.
