you might be able to get away with that but mine if off too except that it says E and got 5 gal in the take...kida like a reserve....but it is the sending unit in the tank....if you decide to replace that while you are in there and get that fuel pump replaced b/c they go and you will see why you don't want to take that tank down again.

Just take the needle off when you know your tank is totally empty and put it back on pointing to Empty. I had the same problem when I installed a new gauge cluster, and it fixed it. Even if that doesn't work, replacing the needle will take half an hour of your time, and chances are it will work fine after that.

Yeah mine had the same problem...the sender's internals would keep the arm/float from going all the way down. Looked bent like someone tweaked it on the last pump change. I just replaced it for good mesasure. I know they aren't cheap, and dropping the tank really sucks (especially when the exhaust is welded all the way to the collectors. I was able to score a sender from my friends car he was parting out.
If you have the time, you can use an Ohm meter and find out if its the sender or the gauge. You'll need a schematic to find out which wire it is going into the instrument cluster. Or you could just pull the cluster and move the needle to empty when the tank is empty like he said...
