whos got autometer gauges in the dash

I want to replace my 4th gen dash setup with my old 3rd gen style but put autometer gauges in the cluster instead. I need to know who has done this and what is involved as far as mounting them. I have the 90-92 cluster design so its a little harder to mount them the iroc style clusters but Im sure it can be done. Basically, I just need all yourt opinions and 2 cents on it. Also, what fuel gauge do I need to run? The Jegs book has about 3 different styles in the pphanton style.

Why do you want to replace your 4th gen dash? Also which one is it? Is it the one from the Camaro or the Firebird? And the same goes for the console.

It would be pretty hard to put guages in the stock bezel. Some guages over lap on the stock piece and the new ones could be bigger too. Most people use either a plexi glass dash panel, or maybe an aluminum. The new guages come with pieces to hold into place so that would not be a problem. The main problem is the wiring. Just time consuming! Look for Zepher's friend"s car, an 82( i think) firebird. He was able to retain his stock cluster but it is totally different from camaro's. As far as the fuel level guage goes, i just used the one for the GM sending units( in tank). When you call to order, let the guy know exactly what it is you are doing and they will help you out in choosing the correct guages! good luck Oh, and most of the guages come with new senders so you should be in good shape there too.

IHI, that does look very nice. I dont care for the 4th gen dash anymore. It doesnt fit perfect and I have different plans for the car this winter and the 4th gen dash wont match the theme of the car.

WOW thats exactly what kind of pic I was loking for. That looking killer. Can you give me some details on the swap and what you went through to get it like that. also. did you use and part ofthe orginal cluster at all to mount the gauges? what did you do for the SES, brake, air bag oand other warning lights? Is that a programmalbe speedo or did you have to buy a sender for it? I am running the t56 trans with a SGI 5 box now

I made the panel out of a sheet of aluminum, it was a test fit one, i havent had a chance to make a better fitting one yet.

My LT1 pcm has the output for the VSS, push button and drive 2 miles for calibration of the speedometer, no airbag so i dont care about the light, although I may install a 4th gen camaro column with airbag, and possibly swap to the "carbon fiber" series gauges.

Goin to install a few LED's for blinker indicators and high beam indicator.

I should be able to get you some of the wiring pinouts.

I just took these this morning-I'm not a photographer, so somebody tell me why the hell my car looks orange when I shoot it with this digital camera, *** it's nasty looking and I hate to even post pics like this. Anyways, here's the updated pic-that one above was 2-3 months ago when I was putting the car back together.

Z28, thats for the reply. Since I already have the 4th gen dash in, my cluster wires have already been messed with so I sholdnt have a problem hooking up automter ones. I already have an oil pressure gauge mounted in my cowl hood so I dont need that one in the dash. You think I can fit 5" tach and speedo gauges and 3 other 2" gauges in there? I think its mightbe close because I have to retain the warning lights on the top. I hope I can figure out a way to keep the whole printed screen that has the letters for the SES and pther warning indicators on it and stil use the new gauges

I doubt you can fit a 5" pair with other 2" ones in there, some other guy has the 5" pair and only one 2 1/16, mine are the 3-3/8
and 2-1/16

I got a carbon fiber look dash insert from Covans classics.com for 82-89. Mine is a 90, and they just now changed the site to say 89 since you can see that two of the gauges are hard to see-took a little customizing to get it in there.
