steering column help

For a long time now, my turn signal lever has been broken. It isnt the lever itself, but the part in the column that the lever goes into. I just pulled the wheel, and the shaft has A LOT of play in it. Is this normal?
Does anybody have a diagram of the dissassembled column? Mine has cruise and steering wheel radio controls, but anything will help. I am trying to fix this so I can use my signals without turning on the brights.

Thanks,

Dave

My local library carries the actual GM service manual for my car and it has all the great diagrams and such. Pay yours a visit maybe this will help. -John
