I never really understood the shades. What is candy apple? I know fire engine red but that's pretty easy. Is candy apple like a redish-maroonish color? Where can I find the stock names in '87? I have that stock red/maroon color but I have no idea what it's called.

to clear it up....candy apple red is not just a paint color. candies are translusent layers of color that are sprayed OVER a base. (imagine a gold base, with a translucent red over it...kinda gives the look of a candy apple's red candy shell)
p.s. for pics...see kandied91z

most candies are a typical tri-stage idea using a color clear or a "tint"
my particular color uses a grey metallic primer coat, a gold and silver heavy metallic mix for the base and a red clear. you can do any number of many variations however most candy reds tend to use a gold base for a darker color and a silver for lighter. i mixed the two because i wanted an in-between look.
in the sun the silver metallic comes through to make it sparkle. at night depending on the light the gold will shine through to make the colors change.
candies are a paint that takes alot of experience to pull off and very expensive. mine isn't perfect but i accept a few of the flaws for the money i saved. a true candy paint job that is flawless can run anywhere from 10-15,000.

there is no single color that will ever look anywhere close to a candy paintjob. if your dad can paint have him try it.....if he's any good you might come up with something very close. just experiment with tri-stage paints on a flat metal platform like a door until you work out the way you want it.
you can't even do a metallic in a single and have anything that looks candy. you will need depth to achieve the look and depth requires multi-stages along with multiple layers....
i have about 10 layers of color on the car to achieve the look and most use 15. the nice thing about candies is that the product itself isn't expensive like most prismatic paints and some of the more elaborate colors. yet if you know how to paint well you can really make a car stand out.
good luck!

Kandied, that car is absolutely gorgeous. I have to ask you this, as I'm fairly new to painting and body works, but did you have to do any finish sanding or buffing to bring the paint out like that, or is that how it came out?

nothing special short of a small amount of wet sanding and the typical finish glaze that you would apply. the above picture is actually a picture of the car when the paint was a few years old. i just try to take good care of it, however it is very hard when i put alot of miles on the car every summer.
one thing is certain.....you cannot perfectly match the paint if you are ever hit or you get chips and scratches so do not paint a car candy if it's your first car or you typically abuse paint as these sorts of colors will not last if subjected to abuse and matching it is impossible. also, the sun makes these colors fade more then normal; basically like heavy metallic factory colors like greys, blues, or even some dark metallic reds.

I see.... interesting how it works. Does a glaze go on before or after a buffing compound (like 3m finesse it)?
I'd love to have a finish like that on my ride, but I don't think I'm anywhere near the skill level to do that yet.

honestly, the most important work was done when the car was finished using the proper polishing compound. after that for the first year i used zaino products because i liked the finish but eventually the price and amount of time it took i became tire of so i went back to the product i originally used to polish and now i use it once a month or whenever the paint looses it's smooth feel to it. often times a top coat sealer or non-carnuba "wax" will be applied every other month.
other then that i wash it once a week in the summer and just enjoy it!
here is a link to the product i use. http://www.wizardsproducts.com
here is a link to a friends vehicle that has a $15,000+ paintjob and uses the same product.

I thought candy apple red was an actual color and not the process. After all there are red candy apples and they have nothing to do with the layering of paints. Its just a descriptive term for the color...like jet black or forrest green.

nope....there is no real color candy apple red. there is the candy process and then you add your own color. there are millions of combinations for varrying shades of a candy color.
there are some factory tri-stage colors that have names "candy" in them but just because you name it one thing doesn't mean it's a true candy color. a real candy color has depth to it almost as if you could reach in and touch the underlying layers. the worst part about candy paint jobs is that they don't look good in pictures. in person and in film they are some of the best colors out there but in a picture they are rather bland.

What happened to your baby? It looks GREAT! I see you lost the ASCD hood, and the wheels still look "right" on the car.
Do much off-road driving?

that isn't kens car.......
there were two stock factory dark metallic reds, three if you count pontiac. one is toredor "sp", dark metallic red, and the 91-92 color that i can't remember the color.
when i painted my candy i wanted it to look as stock to the original color as possible but when the sun hit it i wanted it to sparkle.........
here is the original color

that's the beautiful thing about it and also the reason why they don't show up on 35mm or normal camera film. digital film kind of captures it but you have to see it in person.....it's definately something else. unique and custom yet classy.
a main reason why it's so expensive as well......in order to get all those layers perfectly smooth and then apply a color clear smooth as well makes it difficult. the more layers of color or "tinted" clear adds more depth.
one guy i talked to when looking for a painter had a beautiful gt mustang candy red with 20 layers of red clear!!
it was one of the best candy paintjobs i've ever seen but he wanted 15,000 for the job. maybe in my next life.
either way there are ways around it and it can be an affordable paint job but it is hard to paint and the materials are costly.....that and if you ever get any scratch or problem with the body your car won't look right.
the upside is if done remotely right it's a very nice type of paint that will get looks from everyone!

yep and the fact you can change base coats to give different darkness and depths as well as the top coat shades allow for unique colors so your almost certain to never see the same color on another car, that is unless you share your code.
