tilt steering column doesn't go back up on it's own

when i pull the lever to raise my steering wheel up, it doesn't go up unless you push it. it feels kindof tight as far as moving it up and down. is there a spring or something that makes it go up when you pull the tilt lever? my 88 firebird had a tilt column and it went up on it's own just fine and felt much looser -- like it's supposed to. what needs to be done to fix this?

Did the one you have now ever go up on it's own? There is a spring that is supposed to keep pressure on it but it's a little time consuming to get to, especially without the right tools. You'll have to remove the steering wheel, the lock (you'll need a steering wheel puller), a push in plate (a different kind of puller) to remove the C-Clip, the turn signal indicator, remove the ignition switch, and then the first cover. Once all that is removed, a #3 phillips screw in a square hole, push and turn counter-clockwise, and the spring should be right behind that. And also be aware that there are a few small pieces that may just fall out so pay attention to every little detail so you can put it back together.

I might just live with that if it was me lol, I mean right now mine is loose as hell but it will go up on its own but I have to take it apart to fix it so its not so loose I kinda wish mine just had this problem.

hmmmm. i did yank the steering column from the firebird before it got crushed and it'd just sitting on the floor in my room. i might just take that one apart and put it back together so i know what i'm doing when i work on the one in my camaro. it did go up on it's own when i first bought it but sometime between then and the 4 months it sat before i started driving it the spring that's inside it must've broke or something. oh well. it's gonna get fixed. it's annoying to push it up every time i go to get out. i've got almost all the little stuff wrong with it fixed now so i'm not leaving that go.
