Shift Lever Indicator

Ok,
I've taken the plate off the center console of my 85 firebird. I'm looking for (if it even exsists) the "pointer" or ANY indicator that tells the driver what gear the car is in. I can see the white plastic channel that has the small light atached to the lower rear portion (so the PRND) is visible @ night. BUT there is nothing that is coming from the actual shift lever to point to or highlight what actual gear the vehicle is in! Any suggestions. Its an 85 standard with auto.

The one in my 89 Formula is the same as your 85 I think but I have a buddy that has a 91 that has a shifter that has an indicator. His shift boot and everything is different so if you got the shift boot and inticator from a 91 or so that would give you what you need. Good luck!

It's not that big of a deal, but hard to believe that there is no type of indicator... I mean SH## Everything has an indicator

Yeah I thought the same thing when I realized that my buddy's had an indicator and mine didn't! His is even a baseline model and mine is a Formula 350. It just boils down to the year. Sucks but true.

Ditto on my 85.
I aquired it from a coworker a few years back. Its a base model 2.8 V-6 . Still hard to believe that there is no indicator...
Thanks again

hmmm... how about so when you back out of the driveway and want to go forward, you know where the gear is, and you don't have to take time to think what you're in. i've though of making a sweet LED indicator or maybe finding an indicator assembly off some other car and rigging it or sumthin.....we'll see......

Car: 1990 Pontiac Firebird
Engine: 3.1L v6
Transmission: Automatic
after a while u just know where it is. park wont move, one click down is reverse and u can bump it down to neautral without pushing the button. once its in neutral it wont move back to reverse unless u hit the button so u can slam the shifter forward from drive and only fall into neutral. i just move it down one notch from neutral and im in drive. not hard, u dont need to look down at it even if it had an indicator.

it does not have one, because it does not need one. but really though, mine doesn't either, and it is ok because i am used to it, but i think it should have one though.

Yeah,, there's a good question.. what years did the birds and cams have a shift indicator? and while we're @ it! Why did they decide to not have them in some but not others... I mean my bird is a base model but... come on!
