map lights

have 88 iroc convert...needs more interior lighting. I currently have the no frills rear view mirror with just the flip up/down switch. I would like to put in a mirror with map lights (non-auto dimming). Can it be done? and how to do it? thanks

sure it can be done! I think that's one of the easiest mods to do.
There are some mirrors w/3 or either 4 wires in them.
just pull off your plastic pillar piece on the driver side and run the wires directly to the fuse box. If it was mine, I'd wire one to the door switch-so they go on when the doors are open-one to ground and one to a constant hot-so when the car is off you can still turn on the lights on the mirror.
Also if you search hard enough they have mirrors w/the digital compass, outside temp-etc.
Good luck.

Yep--pretty much. Just make sure you grab the pig tail that goes w/the mirror(harness).

I found a nice one in the junkyard off a Neon. I hate Neons, but the mirror looks good and fit right on. Still gotta wire it up. Sorry, don't have any pics.

I've found in my searches that it seems like an outside vendor makes rearview mirrors for all the big(American) car makers--so they should all fit!!

I did it, and i wired it into my dome light, so it comes on with the doors open, and also has a seperate ground wire that you have to attatch to the roof support so you can turn the lights on with the doors closed.....very simple install....

BTW, mine is out of a 95 Firebird.

yeash, i had this very same problem in my IROC convert so i went to a junkyard and just pulled one out of a 91 Chevy Lumina, took as much of the orginal wiring as i could (about a foot). IIRC, one wire is ground, the other is always hot and the other wire you can just hook into the underdash lights so when you open the door the maplights come on...OMG, it make such a difference, the onlything left is to work on the lighting for the people in the back. Cost my like $2 to do, i just removed the old mirror with that little screw thing, i did not rip it off the window, and screwed the new one up......
