Help HVAC smoking!

In my buddies 92 RS he has to start the car with the AC in the on position if he wants to use it, because if he goes out of AC it starts smoking really bad. What could cause this? We were thinking a short, but from where? we couldn't find anything. Anyone ever hear of htis before?

Thanks

James

I had that exact same problem. You're way ahead of me though. For a long time I only smelt some kind of discusting burning smell. Finally I took the HVAC out a bit so I could see it while the car was on, and boom... I saw the smoke, and smelt the burning plastic. Not only that, I saw part of the plastic glow red... The weird thing is it only did it on certain settings.

I recommend you disconnect the power to the HVAC ASAP if you don't want a fire. (Better safe than sorry)

Anyway, it's been a while but from what I can remember it was the top black circular thing that was fudged up. I just went to a junk yard and took the part off another HVAC and that fixed it. Sorry I don't have any pictures. Let me know if I'm unclear though, and I can take a look at my HVAC again....

Thank you. I am going to help him pull it all out tonight and check it out.

Thanks

Maybe these links will help you find what's on fire...

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=154350

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=177794

Let us know what you find... and you should probably ask this on the main Tech board (instead of body & interior), if you haven't asked there already...
