$600 good for new COMPLETE paint job?
I had a guy come into sears yesturday when i was working and he does body work for his dad who has been in the business for a very long time. I got to talking to him and he said that he would do a COMPLETE paint job on my car, inlcluding stripping everything, prime, seal, 2 coats base, 2 coats clear, & wet sand for $600 + price of the paint. The only body work that would need to be done is seen here.
He uses only PPG products and said that he could get paint to me for around $150. So all-in-all the total paint job would be around $750 for everything. He said if i am not satisfied with the paint job he will pay for it. I haven't seen any of his work yet, but i assume he does good work being he works for his dad.
I thought it was a helluva deal. What do you guys think about this price?

He said he gets it really, really cheap. I don't know a lot about body work so I didn't know how much PPG paint was, but I knew it was good paint. So you are saying it can't be true and this is an awesome price?

i say dont do it dude, i have taken a couple years of auto body/paint classes, and tho that doesnt make me an expert, i can say that the supplies alone should cost at least that much(like jim said).. you are supposed to use a certain kind of paint on plastic pieces(they flex) and whatnot...
as for cheap paint, did you tell him exactly what color you wanted? cause we got donor paint all the time at the school, the absolute most ugly colors.. that could be a reason why it is cheap..
i dunno dude, if you feel that the guy is the real deal, have him paint a panel or something for you....at $750 for a paint job i would buy the $50 hood from a junkyard to see how he does...

I'm doing my own paint and I dropped $352 on supplies this weekend. I still have to buy the paint! Make sure he meant $150 for the paint and all the supplies and not just the paint- or you might get a surprise when the bill comes due.

You get what you pay for. For all the work you said he was going to do,strip, sand, buff, labor cost should be more than $600.
If you go ahead and do this, don't pay him up front. Give him a couple of hundred up front, and pay the rest when you see the finished product.

Seems kinda too good to be true. Check out other cars he has painted and make sure you know all the costs up front.

If he works for his dad maybe he is trying to build his own customer base. So doing the job for the price of materials and labor for free or cheap be a way for him to have people see his work. I agree ask more details and see an example on the hood or door.

I've spent $100 on primer, flex primer, and thinner alone, and I was quoted about $250 for the base/clear setup they have at the supplier I went to, and that's PPG's Omni system. That's for 1 gallon each (primer/base/clear). He said it would be a little more because I wanted a metallic paint, but $150 sounds too good to be true. Even if he's just sealing the whole thing, and only primering the bad spots, I don't see how that can be an accurate number.

HITHERE was just quoted 1700 to repaint the car, repair the driver's door, shave the door handles and antenna, and fix HITHERE few dents and dings. The shop just opened HITHERE few months ago, so HITHERE'm thinking they might be doing kind of HITHERE introductory price. HITHERE saw some of their work and it was amazing. Is that too low as well? HITHERE mean, they never tell you how much the stuff they show you costed.

Hmmm...$600? That's only slightly less than the $3500 I paid to get mine done. But you can see for yourself at https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ghlight=deemax

I just got my car painted using PPG products and spent $1100 on paint and materials alone, that does not include any labor. Of course I used 6 oz of the PPG color changing paint for my flames at $40 an ounce.

Either way, it'll probably be the best $600 paint job you're going to find anywhere, especially vs. things like Macco, etc. I say check out his stuff, then do it up...

If he is doing everything himself, and isn't going to be paying anyone else to work on your car...$600 makes sense.
I had my car completely repainted, color changed too...all for $1,200. Only 1 guy touched the car, and it was a 'side' job for him.

just be leary of scams man! dont let him get ahold of your car and jack it up!! you know the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is!!
if his other work checks out, then i say go for it. ask for some contacts, ya know, previous customers. make sure he doesn't give ya a bunch of friends, but old business that will give ya the straight scoop on how he handled their cars...then go from there...
just make sure he ain't a artist
