Bulkhead Electrical Plugs

Has anyone else had a problem with the bulkhead electrical plug (this is the large plug found on the driver's side of the firewall, just beside the hood latch relase cable) letting water leak through the holes in the plug where the wires for the main wire harness are found? It looks like there was some kind of black tar smeared over the holes, but water still leaks through these holes (with the plug plugged in). I have removed the plug assembly from the firewall, there is a gasket on the inside side of the plug that mates up to the firewall. I added a bead of gasket maker material to it and reinstalled it. So, I have water leaking in through where the plugs plug in AND I have water leaking in around where the plug mounts to the firewall. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
