swapping 87 gta cluster into 82 TA
Is this possible? I want to get reverse indiglo gauges like the ones discussed in this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=166399
but my 82 has a 85mph speedo and doesn't seem to be compatible with those gauges in any way. I have a cluster from a 87 GTA that I bought several years ago without doing any research beforehand. The fact that the GTA's speedo is electrical and my 82's is mechanical scared me off and its been sitting in the box every since. Is there any relatively easy way of swapping this in? Is the cluster even the same size? it looks like it is but i could be wrong. Thanks a lot guys.

It can be done but you need the wireing, sending unit (at the trans) and the speedo buffer (yellow box attached to the computer mount) from the '87 also you need to swap a few of the wires in the plugs. It's not to bad if you have those plus the wireing diagrams of the '82 and the '87. I did it on my old T/A so I could have the 140 speedo.

Thanks for the response. The car has a 4 speed siginaw, will the sender work on this? Then computer is long gone, is the speedo buffer connected to the computer or just mounted in the same spot? Besides wiring differences will the cluster just bolt right in? Thanks a lot man

I'm not sure about the sender fitting. The buffer is a seperate unit feeding both the ECM and the speedo. The gauge panel will bolt in directly. Try running a search on VSS in the DIY Prom area. Some of those posts may answer your question.
