4th gen console in my GTA. Help!
I have the stock center console in my 88 GTA. It looks like crap. The sides are peeling away, it's warped looking, etc. Kind of like a lot of others I've seen. Anyways, if I order a 4th gen console, will it bolt right in or am I going to have to make some mods? If I order the console from Hawks, does it come with the lid and all that stuff I need? I can cut holes for the window switches. No big deal. What is under the lid on a 4th gen console? Matt

A 4th gen console will bolt right in. Under the lid is a storage area, just like the 3rd gens. Having never ordered from Hawks I don't know what comes with it. I got mine from an aquaintance. There really is no place to cut out for the window switches so I made a switch holder out of plexiglass and put that in place of the ashtray.
There are pictures on my web site.

I took 1/8" plexiglass and gradually worked into shape to fit where the ashtray was in the console. Once it fit snug I found dead center on the plexi as it related to the hole I measured out and cut the hole for the power mirror switch. Once that was done I cut the holes for the window switches. It's a tight fit for all three but can be done. I used a Dremel and cutoff wheels (2 mounted together) to do the cutting. Once done and after I tweaked everything for fit, I spray painted the bottom of the plexi and let it dry. I then went and got a product from Ace hardware called "Plastic Weld" and placed the plexi in place of the ashtray lid in the console. I had to do a little more trimming to clear all the wiring and connectors. I used a couple c-clamps and glued it in. Some of the paint came off in the glue process, but you can hardly tell.
I had 3 peices of plexi that broke on me, or that I over shaped before I got it right. Go slow and easy!

has anybody actually tried this with a convertible? I've always wanted to do it but i wasn't too sure on how to wire up the tonneau cover switch that sits in between the two power window switches. Anybody familiar with how the wiring on the cover realase works?

What cg91ta has is exactly what I am wanting to do as soon as I find a console for a good price.

Here's a shot from above. Mind you it's filthy. nikh23, a switch is a switch. There's the wiring underneath, but if you don't have power mirrors I don't see why you couldn't put your switch where the power mirror switch is on mine.

i do have power windows as well as the tonneau cover release switch, if its nothign special then it shouldnt' be a problem. and also is there a reason why you also moved your rear view mirror button to the center console, was it just for convience or did you also do 4th gen door panels?

Stick consoel fit directly, but what about 4th gen auto consoles. HITHERE think they need minor alterations to fit right in auto 89 birds right. What kinda work you think?
