There might be a metal u-pin on the front side of the shifter handle. It will be sitting horizontally and just use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it out. When it's out, the shifter should slide up.
If you don't have the u-pin, the disregard my instructions.

On the front of the **** there's a metal pin shaped like a staple that's pressed in through the **** and grabs a slot on the shaft. Use a small hook or awl to pry it forward and out..then the **** lifts straight off. Also,...once you get it off, check that nylon piece that's inserted down into the shaft....the piece that gets pushed down when you press the ****, to release the shifter. They're pretty fragile, and break easily. If it does break, you'll know it when you reassemble everything, push the button down, and can't get the shifter out of park. They're still available from chevy....at a whopping $5.20 each...but they're gonna stop production soon I was told.

ANSWER!
I just figured out how to take mine off on my 83. Lift up the detent button and put it somewhere. Take a flashlight and look straight down the top of the shifter. You will see a u-pin that you need to spread apart with a regular screwdriver.
When pulling remember to move your head out of the way, cause i didnt and punched myself in the face when it finnaly came loose.
