Removing the protective exterior molding?

I've seen a lot of thirdgens without the molding along the side that protects the car from door dings, shopping carts etc. Is this something that's easy to remove? What holds it on? I really like how they look without this.

They are held onby double sided tape. They come real easy by getting behind it and then just puling it off. The only bad part is that you may also pull the paint off as well.

The old style that used trim rails and rubber inserts were riveted on. The newer style (wider/one solid piece) is held on with double faced tape.

Thanks a lot guys. I've got an 89 RS... would this be the older type or the new?

it should be the newer thicker style and should just peel off. There will be left over sticky crap lefton the car, Use a cleaner that wont eat or soften the clear coat as you rub it out . if you just use your fingers to rub it off, you WILL get blisters. been there before

i plan on gettin those door garde things for my car i got 2 dings in my driver door 1 week after i got it repainted and there just small enuff to be covered by them but ill just fix them becuz i have a spot where someone nailed the door and cracked the bondo/fiberglass filler.

u can just barrely tell theres dents there but there all along the part where the guard thingy would be.

I used a heat gun/ hair dryer to heat my moldings up. They peal off pretty easy and don't leave alot of residue.
