Trans Am Ground Effects...
Hey everyone, I did some searching here but I didnt quite find what I was looking for. Maybe you all can help me out.... Here goes.
I have a 1983 Firebird SE with no ground effects on it. I saw a picture of a 1983 Trans Am with ground effects, and it makes a big difference in the appearence of the car.
I was wondering if ground effects off of any 1982-1990 Trans Am would fit my 1983 Firebird SE. I was also wondering if any ground effects off of a camaro would bolt onto my firebird. If so what years will fit?
And finally, where might I be able to get some. I have seen some auctions on ebay, but they have only been for lower quarter pannels, sideskirts, ect.
Here are some pictures to compare:

You could put 85-90 TA ground effects on it, but youd need the right bumper covers (same years) to make it look right. Camaro ground effects, at least the side pieces, can be made to work also. Some non-factory combinations are possible...for example, my girlfriend's 87 Firebird (originally a base model) has 84 TA front and rear ground effects with stock 87 base bumper covers and 91-92 Camaro RS/Z28 rocker ground effects that are installed lower than stock, without the door pieces.

you should find the front end from a TA (bumper cover, spoiler) and the side skirts from a 91-92 camaro (with or without door bottoms) and the rear bumper cover from a 91-92 firebird (get the deck spoiler while you're at it) you would have one sweet car.
IMHO the 88ish front ends look the best on the TA's if you can find one of those cheap

Hey guys, thats for the feedback. I have a 1984 Trans Am spoiler right now, looks pretty sweet.
But as you were saying about the front end, if I had to get a whole Trans Am front end, would I have to get a hood with intake? Because my Firebird has the intake on the bumper and I know the Trans Am's had them in the hood those years.
Secondly, for the rear, would I have to get a whole bumper cover as well just like the front, or could i just bolt on the bottom peice and throw on some lower quarter pannels to go with it?

talk to redraif for info on the front end, as she swapped noses from firebird to ta.
I belive that the rear bumper cover is a direct replacement part, just bolt and go, as are the quarter panel peices.
good luck

If you can get the gfx off of a 1984 T/A then you wont need to change anything. If you get the 85-90 ones you will need to change the front and rear bumpers as well. Get the 84 ones and your car will look exactly like the brown and gold one up top.

The 85-90 TAs have one piece front and rear bumpercovers...the ground effect/spolier peices are molded in. The only pieces that are truly seperate on them would be the rocker pieces and the short pieces behind the rear wheel. The earlier TAs use seperate bumper covers and ground effects; the lower pieces bolt on. If you can find them, the 84 TA front spoiler could be bolted to your existing bumper cover; same goes for the rear. Redraif has both peices on her 87 Firebird; they technically aren't meant to go on those covers, but with a little tweaking they did. You could bolt the 84 TA pieces on to your existing covers, or swap front and rear covers and reinforcements with any 85-90 TA (or 91-92 for that matter) and look like the car on the bottom. Coolling won't be a problem wither way, as long as you have the plastic air deflector under the car. The 85-90 stuff is pretty common in salvage yards, at least around here; the 84 stuff and the 91-92 is pretty rare, and pricey. 84 TA front spoilers go for $250+, if you can even find one.

Awsome, thanks for all the information guys. I think I might head out to a junkyard or two here within the next couple weeks and see what I can pick up. And by the way, if anyone wants to sell me some 84 TA ground effects for like 2 bucks, just lemme know
And if anyone has any pictures of their swaps from a regular Firebird to ground effects, I would love to see the pictures.

Hey man, thats a sweet Trans Am.
Those pictures that I have posted up top arent of my car. I just have a Firebird, no T-tops. I just recently put a Trans Am spoiler on it though. I also have some nice 15" rims I am gonna put on with some raised white letter tires here sometime in the near future as well.
My Firebird SE is actually white with a tan trim on the very bottom where my ground effects will go. My spoiler is black, but looks half way decent with the blackout tail light covers. And when I get some ground effects put on, I am going to paint it like this:
1983 Trans Am
I think that paintjob with my black spoiler would look nice.
Keep the pictures comin guys =)

I went in to some detail about what I had to go thru to install 84 gfx on a base 87. I have to get some pics up soon. Here is a nose shot

It was not to bad really. I just did not want to go thru the expense of swapping the nose and rear bumper too. To do teh whole car with GM part over $2000. Not what I wanted to spend. SO I went junkyarding and got the whole set off and 84 for $150 & got the side 91-92 Camaro gfx for $75. SO over all not bad and they were all already black, so no painting. Granted They needed new paint, but I wnated to get the whole car done at once and they were passable!

Hey...
All I have to say is WOW.
That is one killer car!!! I really like the uniqueness of the spoiler jobs. You also did a GREAT job fitting those 84 ground effects on.
Thanks alot for sending me the page with you explaining how to do it. I think I am going to head to the junkyard sometime soon and see what I can pick up for my Firebird.
I will let you all know how the quest goes and what I come up with when I head out there.
BTW, what did everyone think of the 2-tone job on that 1983 Trans Am up top?

Thanks!
As for the above paint job...the gold on the brown...it think it looks good. originally I was copying that look on my bird. But with mine I used a smaller faded stripe. though it was left off with the new paint job. Here is my old fader stripe.

Hey RedRaif.
Thats awsome, your car is just amazing =)
However, the paint job I was talking about was the black and white twotone Trans Am picture.
BTW, I took those pictures you posted and whipped up a little something. Let me know what you all think of it.

Sorry I looked at the 1st 2 pics posted,
Ok the White and black. I would love to see some front and rear shots. I'm curious as to what the paint line does there. Its a cool scheme though!

That two-tone bird is a 83 Daytona pacecar... here is mine
I'll see if I can scan a photo of the rear. You guy are right about the rarity of the GFX for these. The GFX was first used on the 83 pace car and as an option on 84 TA's. Not all 84's got 'em. Another hard thing to find is the block off plates for the grill openings. If you look at some of the above photos you can see the difference in the grill.

We'll be there, along with most of our club (the ACFA). It was a great show last year (1st year), and this year should be even better . Hopefully we won't hit any armadillos on the way this time!

I do have the 84 bumper cover with the flat grill inserts in the basement...I got it with my gfx. So many of the screws were rusted holding the gfx to the bumper cover that he just gave me the whole thing...
Pensacola is definately a must! I believe we are leaving that thurs o head down and returning that following monday.

Freewebz doesnt run the best servers with their free stuff
You might also have to copy\paste the links,
I dont know if they work.

Hey there. I am very interested, however, I havent even had the time to go out to a salvage yard to get some prices yet. I have been really busy with school lately . We also just got almost 5 feet of snow here in Denver over the past couple days.
Its been crazy.
Anyways, I have nothing really to compare to, so I dunno.... lay down a price you would like to see. I only need the front and rear bumper effects since they were all one peice in '84. I decided to try to get a pair of Z28 rocker pannels for the sides.
You can email me at AncientKaa666@cs.com
or instant message me on AIM at SoulHarvest669
if you would like to work something out.

Well to give you an idea what I paid. For the 91-92 side gfx...$75.
For all the 84 gfx..sides, front, and 2 rear gfx (split at the rear bumper) $150.00 at a real junk yard and they pulled it for me and gave me the 84 nose case the bolts were seized.
At Pull-a-Part I paid $10 for the nose gfx. So its all where you go.
First make sure they are not really wavey. The front was bad about getting waves in it. When you pull those its important that you get the metal brakets that hold tham to the car. There are 2 on the front and 4 on the rear gfx. You have to have those to install the gfx and you can't buy them to my knowledge. They have square holes that special bolts go in and lock in the hole so they do not spin when you are tightening. The nuts and bolts I had to replace. Home depot had the right hard ware.
The front is the easiest to get off. You have to be under the car...you have to reach in to the back side of the bumper cover from underneath. You will need 11 mm if I remember correct and a 10 mm for the bumper... Remove the 3-4 side gfx nuts. You also have to take off the airdam under the car (part of gfx) I think there will be some screws in the wheel well as well. once the side are loose... Honestly its easier to just remove the front bumper cover and then remove the gfx. Make sure you pull out all the push pins in the bumper under the car. Ther are 4 nuts on each side of the bumper cover. Then you have to take the front plate loose where it bolts to the piece that the hood latches too. I believe this is all to remove the front bumper cover...
For the rear gfx you have to get in the rear hatch...you will need to remove nuts from the bolts that are behind the spare tire. On the other side I would remove the cargo panel. You have to reach down in that well also. I believe there are 3-4 nuts to remove. Get the sides loose. Then take off the bumper cover. Same as the front...remove all push pins. Undo the nuts from the sides of the bumper cover 3-4... I think there are also some nuts under the tailights holding the top of the bumper cover...
You can remove this stuff with the rear bumper cover on, but it is a major pain and very cramped. Its hard as crap the get tools in there. Front is not to bad...

Awsome,
Thanks for all the input RedRaif.
As for 86TransAmws6, Its still your call on those prices.
I am just a poor teenager, lol. So either way I'll
probably have to wait till I get some more money.
I will honestly say I have about $70 to my name right now, lol.
Anyways, I await your response.
I would love to get some ground effects on my car

And RedRaif, is your RamAir hood functional? I have been looking at those new version II ones at RaimAirHood.com but havent seen anyone get one functioning with a 4 barrel carb.
If anyone has any pictures of a functioning kit i would love to see them.

Yes my RAI is functional. The hood has a special boxed area for the ait box to fit into. A bit of weatherstripping and it is a sealed functional Ram Air...
Pic of underside of the hood, so you can see the built in boxed area...

As far as I know, the SunCoast hood like mine is the only truely functional ram Air hood. The others I believe can be adapted to be cold air induction though...
Joe just got a RAI from ASCD...we hope to try to work on its functionality...then the 82 will get a RAII from ASCD...I will do what I can to make it fully functional as well...
Here is the air box that mates up...

Redraif, as soon as you and LT1guy get that RAI functional, let me know. I'd like to see full pics of it. IT's a deciding factor on my hood choice.

I won't be making my RA1 fully functional with an airbox (its a carbed car), but I am going to bolt up one of the RAII style boxes that Hawks sells next time I'm up there to get an idea what would have to be modified. I'll post details when that happens, but it may be a while...we're going in the truck next time to pick up another project. I may just have Bruce bring one down here next time he's in Atlanta for me to try and take some pics. I feel sure some cutting of the hood is going to be necessary to make it work.

Well, it sounds like those hooods are mostly just cosmetic then. But I would imagine having one with the factory dual snorkle intakes would still make the cold air flow somewhat more efficient...
I dunno, I still have all these ideas to finalize before I start on everything. I still need to get rid of these dirt bikes too =) If anyone is interested feel free to email me.
