Everyone with Autometer speedos

I'm now looking into switching over to all Autometer gauges as my stock ones have seen better days. I'm going with electrical for everything except the speedo as my 87 is cable driven (I found this out when I developed a short that kept blowing the gauge fuse).

Anyway, my question is this. Does the stock cable connect to the new Autometer speedo or do I need a replacement? If so, where do I get one from?

Also, where has everyone put the sender for the electrical water temp gauge? I'm guessing the easiest is to replace the soon to be unused factory sender? Where is this located?

Thanks for the help

First off the for the speedo, you'll have to get a new one. Our cars are held in place with a clip where as the autometers are threaded on. Take the speedo to a auto parts store so they can get the end that will thread onto the speedo plus fit in the square hole, then from there they can get the other end to go into the tranny-you just have to know what length you'll need. Buddy spend $9.00 at O'Reilly's for his in his Malibu. I was thinking of going electric, but with the sending unit you need to buy also, it's cheaper to get the cable driven and a gear for the tranny and it does the same thing. As far as the sending unit for the water temp, like you said, use the soon to be vacant factory spot, or a place on the intake, any spot on either head that has a plug in it will do. I ended up installing mine in the pass. side head, but with the new electric water pump, and the automatic switch for it I'm going to change all that around under the hood.

LOKAR sells them for the autometer, but man $$$. I had them send me a catalog and as soon as I seen the prices I threw it away, you can get the stuff cheaper through Summit or Jegs, actually get online or call their tech line, and they should be able to help you out, you'll pay more, but until they start tricking out Panda's & Mini's over there, your kinda sh.t outta luck.

so where is all the pics at? I swapped in a 4th gen dash but I have always wanted Autometer gauges in my dash. Maybe I can reswap in the old dash and get new gauges after Isell my 4th gen dash. One question though. I sold my cluster, Was there anything I needed off the cluster to install automter gauges or can I just make a plate

woudl it be possible to switch the electric VSS sender from a 90-92 or a firebird, and then use the electric speedo.

VSS in the 90-92 cars goes to the ECM first then to the cluster

but would it not be possible to hook the VSS up directly to the an electric autometer speedo, then just do the autometer calibration steps?

i am just tossing ideas out here to see if they are possibilities.

BOTTLEDZr28,

I haven't done the conversion yet but I intnt to make a new plate and move the light screens over from the old one so that the new one has them.

I will post pics when I actually get round to doing it.
