Rear Seat Console?
This may seem trivial to some, but here goes: Has anyone seen, made, or swapped in a console between the rear seats? All I'm really thinking about is, say a double drink holder (I have a 7 year old - **** happens) with maybe a small compartment.
If I could pull this off it might save me some annoyance, not to mention interior cleanup. Any ideas are appreciated.:hail: Thanks.

its already cramped back there, you really want to make it worse?
guess it could be done but it might be awkard to blend it all the way to the back seat.

Get a 97+ 4th gen manual tranny console. There are 2 drink holders in the back and another 2 for the front. It basically bolts straight in.

Hey, thanks. I'm not well versed in 4th gen interiors, so I had no idea it could be that simple. Knowledge like this is why I like it around here.

A 97+ 4th Gen console has 2 cupholders on the back of the console and is a great thing......
I will post a picture of my swap in about a 1week...

IIRC some of the newer Saturn coupes have 2 seats in the back with cup holders between. Maybe that could be swapped over

I was really thinking of sort of a "mini console" separate from the main console, so the Saturn thing might be some thing to consider. Just the same, the 4th gen interior is starting to grow on me. This gives me something to think about, though.
Thanks, guys.:hail:

That might fit, but I'm really after the drink holder(s). But hey, I did say any ideas were appreciated.

Keep in mind that a 4th gen console in a thirdgen camaro is a MUCH different project than in a thirdgen firebird. The camaro console also incorporates the HVAC and radio. In the firebird, that's separate. There's one or 2 people here that hacked the camaro console in order to keep the radio & HVAC portion, but it looked... well, hacked. A second separate console would definately be easier.
But also keep in mind that with a center console, you won't be able to put the rear seats down. If you need to put the seats down on occasion, make sure the center console can be easily removed.

Actually, I'm leaning towards a separate console, for a couple of reasons:
1) My original interior is in pretty nice shape, and I like it.
2) I have very little time for my car, so I'm thinking that a smaller project will likely be completed sooner.
Also, I'm planning on getting a pair of door pockets with the drink holders from Thirdgen Resource, so that covers the front. And I did plan to make it easily removeable as I have the folding seat, but I'm glad you mentioned it.
However I was not aware of the difficulty of the 4th gen into Camaro swap, thanks again for your expertise.

How bout this.....
Find a used console, and cut off the part after or within the gear selector area. Make a new plate with cupholders in it (dont know exactly how you'd go about doing this ( motorhome supply store might have the cup part, so you could just make a hole, and glue it in place) and bolt that in place of the gear selector plate. Finish off the front somehow and voilla. You'd get cupholders, matching styling, an arm rest for the rear pasengers, and another compartment for stuff.
I think it would fit right in between the seats. I have a loose one at the moment, so i'll check out the width (only problem area i can foresee) in my other car tomorrow or saturday

On that note, i just thought of something else. When tall people get stuck in the back, they usually put their inside knee in the space between the front seets (not 'between' but you know what i mean) so if it goes too far foreward, you might cramp the legroom.
Perfect example of my thought .... My dad's LHS (200 Chrysler LHS if you want to hunt for pics) has a middle cosole in the back separate from the front console. It has 2 cup holders, an arm rest/storage bin, the only difference is, the back seat is more of a bench than buckets (the console folds up if you need more room)
Wish i could post pics, cause they'd speak a thousand posts.....

That's something I wouldn't have thought of on my own. Yeah, the overall width is the big question on this one, but to be honest - while you used some imagination on this I never really wanted it that big. Just a couple of drink holders between the seats to keep it simple. Not a bad idea though, thanks.
On another note, I'm really surprised at the response I've gotten on this - didn't think it was THAT interesting.

The auto trans shifter is slightly taller and sits about 1 1/2 - 2 inches further back in a 4th than in a third. I've seen it installed but didn't want to hack on my car right now. I have the shifter and top for it already, just no guts.
Yes, those are drink holders in the door, provided the drink is a big gulp. They barely hold a soda can upright.

For daily driving I got this. The base is a cheap console that is curved to fit over a hump. This on was just wide enough to fit b/w the seats. The cup holders were not deep enough, so i got one of those adjustable ones from Wal-Mart. I found its bottom clamp fit perfectly gripping the center of the 2 smaller cup holders. this thing has been very stable. It can hold a full 32 oz drink while I'm driving anfd it has never tried to tip. I think they sill sell teh bottom console at WalMart and KMart. Its nothing special, but it works!

Believe it or not, I had just started thinking of that a couple of days ago. And while it may be nothing special, it might be a good temporary fix until I come up with something more permanent.
Thanks, Redraif.

Can't knock it if it works...Yep I take it out at car shows. Function over form in this case! I plan to come up with something better though. I just have to play around with the ideas on the 82, and by then I will be much more confident with fiberglassing. Turns out my glove box is hanging up and the sides have already had to be glued back. Now the armrest on top has a split in it. I will have to get a new one or make a new one! I may try to fab a fiber glass one that has some kind of cup holders in the back...I have a few junk yard shells I can use as a skeleton...

Well, eventually I think I'll probably scratch build some sort of simple mini console to fit on top of the trans hump between the rear seats. Not real sure yet how I'll fab it yet, but learning how to use fiberglass wouldn't be a bad project for me either. Unless I come up with a better idea...
