changing gauge needle color???
hey, i know some of you out there have your gauges all lit up different colors and stuff like that. not really waht im after, what i want is to keep the orange (firebird) but change the needles to light up a different color. ( im tired of the needles being the same color as the gauges) im sure it is probably pretty easy.
i have a 91 firebird (backlit gauges, i guess).
do you just sand off teh orange from the needle, and paint the back of it another color? if so, what kind of paints, and what colors would work best??
also, if anyone has any pics??

The color is determined by an adhesive strip on the back of the needle. You can remove it and go to a hobby shop to get different color needle. If you are looking to make them yellow, some camaro needles made between 90-92 were yellow.

If you have the clear plastic needles you can buy a colored led light kit that stickes to the guage, you then paint the guage needle back white and it will shine the color you buy, I did this to my Olds looks nice.
Here is a site that tells you about them but you can get them a lot cheaper there is a guy selling them on EBay for $9.99 a set.

I did mine in black, took an X-acto blade and carefully scraped the paint off... Then I used a paint marker to paint it black. I imagine it would work for any color.

hmmm curious..how do you get into the gauge to get at the needle? Maybe its just the style of my cluster but i got a dead spider in my speedometer, and hell if i can get it out. Seems like the whole cluster is sealed shut, and i'd have to crack it open or get a new one heh. RPO is UB3 cluster setup and D9A speedo

I see you have a T/A... OK here it goes...
Remove the 4 (7mm) screws on top of the dash pad in the defroster duct.
Remove the 2 (7mm) screws from underneeth your "driving light switch" on the left side of your dash. Pull piece straight out, let hang by wires OR unplug)
Remove the 3 (7mm) screws on the passenger side lower tim piece (has the "Performance Suspension" emblem on it (If applicable) and remove piece.
Remove screws from under your dash pad, that hold dash pad in, Remove dash pad, be careful not to damage your speaker grill plastic studs when removing.
Remove the screws around the instrument panel trim piece, INCLUDING the one all the way to the right under the passenger side trim piece.
Put your steeringwheel ALL the way down
REmove the screws around the IP, and pull out (NOT THE GOLD ONES) those actually hold the clear plastic to the Panel, you can more easily work on your IP with it out.
This should work for 86-89 T/A's, 90-92 is similar
I hope I remembered everything, its been a while.
To remove the needles, let the gages come to a rest, and mark their location. I use a "sharpie" marker, and mark on the white area all the way to the outside (you will see) its hidden by the trim piece.
then with 2 small screwdrivers, slowly & GENTLY pry up on BOTH sides of the center of the needle at the same time. You can put a little bit of masking tape on the tips of the screwdrivers to help keep from scratching the screenprinting on the gages.
to reassemble do reverse.
hope that helps.

on the 95Z IP, I can only assume if the needles are the same, with paint on the back then all you need is an X-Acto knife and the paint... and some patients of course...
And no, the Dash does not come apart the same way...
