I have the power pull down on my 86 camaro and I just recently bought a new hatch seal from GM, the seal is very thick so my trunk pull down motor kind of stuggled to close it, and one time I went to close it and it stopped, "I think it pulled it down all the way" but then when I popped the trunk the hatch came up but the mechanism didnt come back up with it, the mechanism is kind of stuck half way up I think is there a way to manuely get it to come back up, or could my motor have burnt out because of all the stress it took to close?

Let me know what you all think cause these things get pretty pricey

It could be either. There is a release mech if it is just stuck. The mechanism is to the right of the lock piece that grabs the trunk. if it's fried you can buy a new one by pm LFN AT U. Also do a search for more info on these pull downs.

how does the release mechanism work, so that I can try that, if the release mechanism doesnt work does that mean the only other thing it could be is the actual motor part?

mine was fried in my 87 so i email LFN AT U and he just got me a used one from an 86

I can tell you what happened. With the new hatch seal in place the pull-down unit wasn't able to fully close. It stalled out and hadn't tripped the reversing switch. The instructions for my guides (101170, down-loadable from the documentation section of my web site) describe how to properly assemble and adjust the unit. You MUST hear a click when it is done cycling down. If you don't (and I guarantee yours didn't) the motor will still be energized and fry. You must immediately pop the hatch and adjust it up. Actually start by adjusting it all the way up and let it cycle down. Test the compression of the seal. If it needs more compression of the seal, then release the hatch and adjust it a little lower. Be sure to mark the starting location with a permanent marker around the frame so you know how much you are adjusting it down each time.

You'll need to replace your motor now. Since GM has discontinued that style motor you have two options. You can swap in a good used motor. Or you can replace it with a new style motor and motor housing. Both are available on my web site. Of course I reinforce the motor housing on the new style motor I sell. Hawkens and ThirdGenResources sell the unit un-reinforced if you need to save a bit.

thanks lonsal, I downloaded the information and it is great! I wish I could have known about being able to adjust the unit up before I tried to close the trunk, I remember when I closed the trunk the first time it went down ok just struggled towards the end, but I tried again and it stopped and I didnt think it latched but it did because when I put the key in it popped but then the mechanism would not come back up, does that really mean the motor is toast? is there anyway to test it before I buy a new one?

Remove the motor and apply + & - 12v to the two terminals that the reversing switch attaches to. It doesn't take long to fry it once it is stalled.
