floor board repair
I finished taking out my interior today, and found that my driver side floor board is gone. Is it ok to just cut out the bad part, and weld in some sheet metal, of should i spend the money and buy a preformed piece? I would rather just use scraps of metal i have around, other than spending more money. Let me know what you think.

Looks like the floor of my truck, lol. I've got a street sign for a floorboard in my truck. So I don't see why you couldn't use a normal piece of metal. I think a preformed piece would fit better though.

I had the same problem in my car. what I did was cut out the rust and weld in pieces of sheet metal in, then I painted the metal so it wouldn't rust again. I bent the sheet metal so it had the same shape of the old floor. So far its been 6 months and its held up good. I keep on putting coats of paint to keep it from rusting again. Hope this helps.

Simple, go to the junk yard and cut out the floor board from another 3rd gen. Then cut out all the rusted parts and weld in the new panel, prep and then paint. It would make a great weekend project. And por 15 the underside after you weld it in.

i half assed it and took it to one of my dad's ever so reliable farmer associates, all he does is weld, every day, all day. Dad was right, he's a damn good welder....on farm machinery. The son of a bitch welded a 1/4"x20"x14" peice of steel in my driver's side floor. The carpet kit doesn't quite fit right, and the pedals have never felt the same as before. Trust me here, get replacements from the junkyard or year one (coulda been goodmark, but one of the two had 3rdgen full length floorpans in the catalog i picked up at super chevy in indy)

i just found the leak in my floorboard yesterday - one i had posted about a couple of weeks ago. seems, too, it was rusted out. gonna take it to the shop tuesday just to get that area removed and replaced for now til i do the major work later. guy said it was about a 5 hour job to do mine, but wanted the car like 4 days! i told him if he can't do it all in one day i'd find someone else. he changed his tune then, so we'll see... i'll let you all know how it goes.

Quarter inch steel?!? Wow, yeah, that's definately not for automotive use! Whew. I'd say to just bend some sheetmetal to fit up there, and weld it in. It doesn't need to hold much weight, unless you like sitting underneath your dash. You could probably cut the old piece out first, and use it as a template to bend a new piece of steel against it (or whatever's left of it).

thanks for all the helpful tips!!
i really like the idea of going and cutting a floor board out of a junk car, but having a broken leg, it isnt that easy to go to the junkyard and cut stuff out
I think i might just cut and bend up my old hood and fit it as best as i can.

Lol, I forgot about the leg. This is a reason why I like my only junk yard. I've given them soooo much business in the camaro dept they are always happy to remove parts for me when I am not able to. The hood idea sounds good to do since you have a broken leg. I cant wait to be able to walk again so I can work on my car too. Good luck with your project.
