Trying to make room for LCD screen... need help with HVAC relocation... pics inside
Alright, I need to relocate my HVAC controls in order to make room for an LCD screen. I would've preferred to move my stereo but it's bulkier (depth-wise) and I think would be harder to find a place for. The only thing I can really think to do (that would actually look pretty sweet if I could pull it off) is to move it into the center console where the ashtray is. (I don't smoke, and I don't want anyone smoking in my car anyway. ) My preference would be to flush-mount it (that would look awesome)...
but I don't think I have the 5 inches or so of mounting depth that I would need to do that, so I would have to have it stick out a bit.
Does anybody have any idea how I could do this? These are the problems I'm facing:
1.) I'm afraid to cut up my interior parts for fear of screwing them up, though I could always replace them...money is tight though.
2.) I don't think that the metal wire that is connected to the "Hot/Cold" slider is long enough... and I'm not sure how to increase that length or be able to move it without bending it up... I can't even figure out how to get it off as it is!
3.) The gap that would be produced by raising the controls up in order to make it fit... I don't know how to fabricate something to make it look like it came from the factory that way.
I'm sure I've thought of more problems but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
Like I said, I'd rather move the stereo down there, but it's not very deep. If anybody has any ideas on how to do this, or alternate locations I could move either the stereo or HVAC controls, it would be much appreciated.

Maybe look into getting some HVAC controls from another car and doing some custom work??
Build a pod on the side of the radio pod to hold the HVAC controls...
Just throwing out some ideas.....

if you dont drive in the winter and you dont "need" a/c dont worry about it and just put it there...also.. i know i am not the first to think of this but what about putting the deck in the air vents above the stereo and hvac controls?? thats where mine is going when i put it in..

Why not mount it to the top of the car....right above the rear view mirror??
I HAVE seen that done before, but it was on a custom hot rod....
It looked nice...
Plus it'll confuse the hell out of anyone trying to steal it...

I have no idea how I'd run wires and such to the roof like that without major messing around.
I'm thinking about just trying to make an enclosure for the stereo out of fiberglass, smoothed with Bondo, covered in vinyl, flush mounted under my dash on the driver's side.

just an idea I got from looking at the rear HVAC controllers on the montanas and the yukons at work it come up with a wat to moune either the stereo or the controls in an overhead console. I think that would be kinda cool.ir maybe mounting the screen up there and leave that stuff where it is and make it flip down when you want to see it.

Well I'm really trying to avoid the flip-down or flip-out look.... I want the screen flush mounted and I want everything to look like it's supposed to be there, although very custom. I want the LCD to be centralized so I pretty much decided it's going in the area where a stereo goes now.
