Can fiberglass be repaired?

Here is my question, the fiberglass on the front of my camaro has a crack in it, extending about 3in starting by the headlight bay thing, then going down at and angle. The rear has a big dent in it. Can these be repaired, or do I need new stuff. Thanks.

fiberglass repair

I found fiberglass repair kits at menards, i dont know how good those would work. I have the same problem on my 92 RS. prices for a new bumper cover are 150 to 190.

Get a product called SEM plastic filler/fixer...something like that. You can find it at hardware store or auto store. It will fix cracks, gouges, etc.

I'm not sure about "big dents." You could try pushing it out a bit, then filling it in w/ layers of SEM.

I don't think that fiberglass repair kits will work well as the pieces are urethane, and have different physical properties.

3M!

Go to walmart,(since they are everywhere) and look in the hardware section and 3M makes a SMALL thread fiberglass repair kit that can be lightly wet-sanded to fill in small holes or cracks. something that runs from an edge(where you can seperate them from each-other, needs to be secured from the back-side, you can go to a large hobby shop and by plastic tape and cut a thin strip, just enough to cover the back side of the split, and then use a few small strips across the crack to "butterfly" the crack. Then on the front side, take a little sealer and force a THIN layer inbetween the crack until it fills to the tape and overflows a little. that can be sanded down with the final sanding. BTW, with the sanding use nothing corser than 400 to 500 grit wet paper.) And if you don't want to go through that yourself, you can pop off the piece and take it to any good body shop and they can usually do a good job of cleaning it all up for you and they will even paint it for you too. It may cost more, but you'll save yourself the work. And remember, watch out for those damn parking blocks and high driveways!! Take care!

to repair dents in the urethane, take a heat gun or hair dryer and heat up the dented area until the urethane starts to krinkle where the heat is applied, then push on the dented area until you get it as close to normal as possible (a little bulging is ok because you can sand the bumper smooth to an extent). then after you have finished, use a flex filler to fill the gullies and sand scratches on the area affected, then prime it with a flex primer after sanding the bumper, then paint it the appropiate paint with flex added in, and you have just completed your bumper repair. for gashes of holes, you have to use a urethane filler with a backing to support it. you can get these from places that deal in automotive paints, or off of the net.
BUT BEWARE, ANY STRESS CRACKS THAT SHOW THROUGH THE PAINT BEFORE SANDING WILL COME BACK THROUGH THE NEW PAINT. if you have these, you are better off getting a new bumper cover.

good luck

thanks

Fiberglass is easier than metal to work. Just get yourself some fiberglass cloth and some resin and go to town.

I got hit and have about a 3.5in crack in the front bumper, and a dent in the rear. I will try some of this and see how it turns out.
