91 Vs. 82-90 Aerowing

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THEY CHANGED UP THE AEROWING STYLE FROM THE 82-90 STYLE TO THE 91 STYLE WHICH IS FLAT AND HAS A NOTCH IN IT. WAS IT JUST LOOKS OR PERFORMANCE??? WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF IT'S APPEARANCE VS. CLASSIC GTA STYLE....

well first off the Aero wing fist came out in 85 and was made tell 90, Than thay Changed it (91-92 Aero wing) to go with the Styleing of the new Front bumper and GFX in 91-92 Keep in mind all of this was based off the Banshee Prototype car.

it took GM 5 years to find out that the rubber crap that spoiler was made from was a terrible design. The 91-92 is much better design structurally.

I prefer the 91-92, lighter and doesn't rot in the sun like the rubber style ones do

91-92 all the way

the 91 wing has my vote.

i have 2 friends who've had the rubber wing on their t/a's.. one of them didn't have any paint (on a red car -- ew!) and the other has paint, but isn't holding on very well. the last owner had it painted 6 months ago and its already cracked to hell.

i have the 91 wing on my 85, looks way sharper , HAS to be lighter, and my car is more unique because of it. (all the glory of the 91 spoiler without the ugmo front end, ugmo side gfx, and ugmo rear end)

ugmo: (adj.) 1. Displeasing to the eye; unsightly.

2.Repulsive or offensive; objectionable: that car is ugmo.

[ sorry to 91 / 92 lovers but i dislike the look of t/a's for those years.. except for the spoiler and interior ]

thanks. That picture reminds me alot of a 4th gen spoiler. They just seem to meet up with the back hatch really tight. I know the one I have (stock 87) leaves a good sized space between the spoiler and the hatch glass. It's definitely a different look.

I would also agree that the '91-92 spoiler looks better....and I may be wrong, but I thought the '85 T/A's still had the fender vents....?

the gold bird on the back was specific to the GTA. Other TransAms got silver or red birds. That's why I was asking.

ohh

sorry... i missed some posts in there.. must have scrolled down before they loaded or something.

yeah the guy who owned the car before me had all gta stuff on there.. emblem in the front, gold bird on the back, stuff like that. the gta's didn't start till 87 or whatever right, but.. well.. i have a 350 and an automatic, and i have recaro seats.. so its more or less a gta, so thats what he called it.

i did too for a while, but i ditched the emblem and window sticker and like it much better as it is now.

i'd rather not have the gold bird on the back, but i dont have one to replace it. i want a blue one (i've seen them, but dont have one) for it to match my neon and accents inside/outside.

IF I SWAP THE 85-90 AEROWING FOR THE 91 ILL LOSE MY 3RD BRAKE LIGHT. I COULD LIVE WITHOUT IT BUT ILL HAVE TO PATCH WIREING HOLE IN THE HATCH FOR THE LIGHT. MY 3RD SITS UNDER THE WING. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS PRESENTS ANY LEGAL OR INSPECTION PROBLEMS FOR A CAR THATS AN 88. ANY LAWS [NJ] THAT SAYS I HAVE TO HAVE ONE.

I am not sure on the legal issue, but you will have to patch current holes on the decklid anyway. The 91-92 mounts in a totally different spot.AND if you dont get the hatch with it you will have to figure out how to secure the sides of the spoiler. They dont use the 85-90 clips

ANY IDEA HOW TO PATCH THE HOLES WITHOUT WELDING/GRINDING. IS THERE ANY BODY PASTE/EPOXIES I COULD SQUEEZE IN AND SURFACE. DO YOU KNOW IF THE 91 WING WOULD CONCEAL THE CLIPS FROM THE 88 HATCH. IF SO MAYBE I COULD PUT SOME RECESSED AREAS IN 91 WING WHERE THE CLIPS COULD BE HIDDEN AND FASTEN WITH THE TAPE. MY HATCH IS GOOD. I WOULD HATE TO HAVE TO GET A NEW ONE AND PAINT IT ECT...

THANKS

I swapped a 92 aero wing on my 90 Formula after having it repainted and the paint started cracking again in less than 1 year. As for the third brake light issue,I just swapped an entire hatch from a 92 GTA which also solved the mounting holes problem as well. See my pic below.
