usually if you have rust on your body, the paint is already messed up- - metal under the paint oxidizes and causes rust. The only way to truly get rid of any rust, you will have to sand/grind the rust down to bare metal then quickly prime (so the bare metal doesn't rust), paint and clear.

You can also use a product like POR-15, which you paint over the rust. It stops the rust from spreading, and hardens to strengthen the spot that is already rusted. I am currently in the process or stripping/repainting my jeep, and have gone over all the rust spots w/ POR-15. You still also want to sand the rust a bit to remove any loose particles, but not all the way to bare metal as POR-15 binds better to surface rust. Pretty much you clean the area w/ a cleaner (their Marine Cleaner for instance), add a Metal Prep if it is bare metal (to etch it for better adhesion), then add the POR-15, then if needed their Tie-Coat Primer which allows you to then paint on top of the POR-15 covered spot.

Anyways...whichever way you decide to go, just remember that if you don't fully get rid of the rust, it will come back....and in most cases you will ended up having to repaint that area.

what you should really do for a good fix is sandblast the rusty area and the area around it and use a filler like dura glass then sand with 80 then use bondo and sand with 80 then 220 then 320. then prime the area and sand with a block and paint it.

why bondo if there is no body damage. all bondo does is absorb water which will eventually rot away again.

...yeah, bondo =

if you do have to do any body filling, look for any other product besides bondo

OXISOLV RUST REMOVER 20 OUNCE SPRAY
Item-no 16026 www.eastwoodcompany.com

This specially formulated Rust Remover is a powerful, rust-fighting liquid created to meet the needs of auto restorers. It reaches even inaccessable areas, quickly dissolving iron oxide completly and leaving a zinc phosphate coating. Rust Remover can be sprayed, brushed, or used as a parts dip. It is non-toxic, non-flammable and reusable. This is not a primer. Treated surfaces should be wiped with PRE Painting Prep (10041 Z) or thinner before priming and painting.

Good stuff...

sand blast. If it's VERY minor you can grind it, but it'll still come back. What you don't realize is that it's 10x bigger under the paint compared to what you see. If you see one tiny spot the size of the head of a pin poking through the paint, there will be a rust spot the size of a dime under the paint.

There's absolutely no effective way to remove rust without first removing the paint.

so does Primer if you come down to it...

I have seen cars from the factory with bondo, they dinged something and had to fix it.

The reson for using bondo and duraglass is to fill the pits left from the rust after you sandblast it. If you dont use some sort of filler then you will have pits left in the metal. If you use duraglass first then you dont really have to worry about it absorbing water and rotting out again.

Deadbird is right on the money in using oxisolve (or any other similar product containing phosphoric acid). The only way to ensure rust not returning is to remove it 100% as these products do.Then paint as per normal.

TIP:soak tissue paper in oxisolve and apply to rust, keep tissue wet by periodically applying oxisolve. This saves you from having to apply it a lot less often giving you more time to sit in front of a screen vegitating.
