91 Convertible Window Replacement
I have seen on these boards some of you have been able to get a new convertible window sewn in for about $100.00. I have been to two convertible top shops. One says he will do it for about $300.00 the other guys says he won't do it at all. They both say the entire top has to come off. What gives? Is the top on the 1991's different than the others? They both will do a new top for about $750.00, but the original top is still in excellent condition with the exception of a two inch gouge (not through) in my window. Not a big deal, but being the perfectionist it bothers me.

I'm the person that mentioned having a rear window replaced and the price. I can drop in and ask at the shop I use, but I don't think they remove the top to sew it in. I've had rear windows sewn into two of my convertibles (a 1979 Fiat 200 Spyder and my 90 RS 'vert). I also had them repair the small hole that wears through near where the B-pillar would be. They patched it from the inside. The shop I use is reasonably price, does good work and as a result is very busy. There are at least a dozen cars in there being done on any given day. Maybe you should drive to SoCal?

Just got my top replaced on my 'vert about 1 year ago. The window had cracked open and was falling in. I took it to a guy one of my buddies recommended and he said to just get the whole ting replaced. While yes it is possible to just replace the window, they have to take the top off the fram to sew in the new one and it would probly tear the top when they were putting it back on, since the fabric has all stretched and the sewing around the new window hasn't. My father just got only the window replaced on his convertable, and i was less than pleased with the results. It sags in some places and is tight in others, could have been just a crap job by the guy who did it, but for the money, he paid about $400, i'd just get a new top. just my experience ant $.02.
