Help with cupholders
Guys,
I have just recently aquired the cup holder / pockets that fit on the side of each door. I have an 1987 z28, and I was wondering if anyone could measure their door panel and tell me where I should cut the fabric, and drill some holes for the installation. Thanks in advance

I just installed some on my 88. I took the inner door pannel off (could simply pry out fasteners along bottom and sides) and matched up the cup holder/pocket with the metal under the panel. If you don't do this you might hit the window mechanism or a hole in the metal. Search this topic and you will find other threads on this topic, including a picture of the cupholders installed to help with proper placement.

I appreciate the response.
I appreciate the response, but aren't there suppose to be holes that I can directly mound the cupholder to. If so, what are the measurements on the door panel to their location?

There were no existing holes in my 88 doors. I think that the cup holders came on 1992 Firebirds and that the holes are in the 1992 doors. I had to hold the unit up to the door with the finish panel off to see where I could drill holes to mount it. You will also notice that the attachment points on the cup holder unit are different lengths to conform with the contours of the stamped metal the door is made of. The cup holder mountimg location is pretty much dictated by the shape of the door and other stuff already mounted. By the way, I think that you have to have power windows for these units to fit ... I think a window crank handle would not clear the cup holder unit. Good luck.

Thanks again
Thank you again, for the post. I have power windows, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I took the cupholders out of my 92 formula and put them in my 91 camaro, which originally didn't have them. The cupholder screws thread into these square plastic body clips. The clips weren't there on the camaro, but there were the square holes in the door for the clips. So on mine, I didn't have to drill, I just popped the clips into place and mounted up the cupholders. Of course I had the firebird door panels to match, so I didnt have to worry about where to cut the holes in the door panels.

I had the same problem trying to mount cupholders correctly in my 88 IROC, someone with a Firebird with the original holes could help alot by getting the measurements or (better yet) making a template. Any takers? Even a picture with a tape measure held there would be a great help.

I am attempting to insert a link to previous thread with pictures. This subject has been hashed over many times. If someone came up with a pattern and a few pictures it would make a good tech article.

here is an idea for a cupholder. i put this in my camaro and it works great. it was a chance i took at cutting my car up and luckly it worked. i bought a cup holder that is suppose to fit in a factory car cup holder to make it bigger from PepBoys. i took a 3 in. circle saw cut out thing and made a hold in the console. i then took some 5 minute epoxy and epoxied it down. if you have any questions just email me at bubbakutz@yahoo.com:rockon:
