Paint at home?
#2
i had my hatch painted in a garage, the only thing that went badly with it was that a renegade hair decided to attack my car and now i have a little hair stuck in my paint, i'm sure i can take care of it... i just havnt gotten to it yet. just make sure nothing is around to get kicked up to land on your fresh paint

Here's my friends truck I've been slowly (and I do mean slow :sillylol: ) working on as well in his garage..
Started as..

Slowly to..

To (still unfinished) paint that looks like such..

Paint looks only as good as the prep. Even the best of the best paint jobs get crap in the paint and have to be color sanded and buffed.. just not quite as much as one's self doing it in their garage.

All you need to do is either have a 1 stall garage that has been cleaned compltely...probably even hosed out. All you need to do is get some box fans or something to draw air through the garage, and buy some home air filters that go in your furnace, and stick those in front of the fan... clean air coming in...clean inside garage.
If you have a large garage, I would suggest partitioning it off with plastic.
I know my dad has painted one of our cars in our garage, and we plan on repainting 2-3 more of our cars this way.
Like deadbird said... "it's only as good as the prep work" that is done ahead of the painting.

Deadbird did you do the engine bay too?

Yes.. I painted the engine bay while my motor was out.. I did skimp doing it an used Plastikote spray bombs there at the time since I didn't have access to a paint gun or air compressor at the time. It didn't turn out bad but, I may redo it in the future.

My dad and I painted at least 6 or 7 cars in the garage when I was living there. Put up lots of plastic, clean the floors (wash them down...maybe even leave a tiny bit of water on the floor) and make sure you have LOTS of lights at different heights. If you think you have enough lights, add more, then maybe you'll have enough. I'll scan some pics later and post them.

I dont have a garage at the moment. Would it be ok to prep (sand down, etch, primer) a car under a carport? Ill be having a friend paint in his shop but I want to do as much as I can myself. I can keep the car dry from the weather.

I picked up the automotive paint & bodywork book from summitracing.com, it goes into the types of paint. Then I went and bought my Devilbiss Finishline II HVLP gravity-feed gun! http://www.eastwoodcompany.com wants $170, but i found it online for $125.
See me yapping about it here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=127245
The book is summitracing.com part # HPB-HP1082, see it here: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=1784 You could probably get it from Barnes & Noble bn.com too.
And primer isn't waterproof, so Lock, make sure that car doesn't get wet under that carport!!! Read my "maaco" message for info on prep- don't sand down to bare metal unless absolutely necessary (fixing a dent or rust or poorly-adhered old paint) https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=100797

i did it (not my camaro). it looked fine. the way i look at it is, if you get dirt in the paint, you can just wet sand it out.

even if your garage is clean, cover everything with plastic. seal all gaps of the car (ie door gaps, panel edges etc. soak with paint) then wipe the exteror of the car with clean rags and thinner to remove paint from the sealing process, and any overspray or contaminants, tac rag, and your ready to go..
BTW!!! IT is extremely important that you put water on the floor to trap dust etc. if you don't you'll see it in the finish (i didn't the first time and had to re-prep and paint a few days later to get rid of the dust.) Put enough water down to keep it wet while your in there, but not enough to pool it (splashing while painting is bad)
also when your done. leave don't go back or check on it till the paint has set up, as you risk drawing in dust hair or anything else.
I was told by the guy who heped me that the paint curing process creates static electricity, so any lint dust or hair gets sucked to the car. (ie no fuzzy sweaters in paint area)
if bugs or anything land on it and are standing let the paint set, and just cut them off at the surface with a sharp razor when the paint has cured.
Also beware. cats like wet paint.... lock the door
Hope this helped
