Fill your tank and Park it on a hill (nose up or driver side down the hill; try both) you will probably have gas leak out of the top of the tank where the filler neck connects. My car does this, I have a small split in the tank there, its just a bi*** to replace the tank so I haven't fixed the problem yet. I just have to rember not to park on a hill with a full tank. I will probably replace my tank, and fuel pump (my car has 174k most go out around 200k on it and its on its orginal fuel pump) so I figure since the tank is out might as well kill two birds with one stone. And I will probably do this when I put the 4th gen rear in my car, 3 things in one procedure.
If this is not the case it will probably get worse, try a really steap hill. Also could be running rich, check for black smoke when you crank the car, also scan your computer to see if you are getting a O2 sensor code.

I ve got a 91 Z28 with a TPI 305 auto, I experience the same thing. I never see any fuel leaking though. I have only 83.000 miles on mine. I seem to think that I was researching this before and found a service bulletin or a recall on the filler neck breaking at the tank. I can't remember where I saw it though. Its on the web some where.

I just recently had the same thing start happening with my 88 305TBI T/A, it started right after I filled it recently and it sat for a few days after that, then I noticed the smell, I looked under it and there's wetness coming from the top of the tank around where I'd assume the neck goes it so I assume it is probably the tank
Anyone know if the filler neck is solid or if it has a rubber piece to it?
Thanks,
Jeff

I barely looked at the filler neck when I had my tank out last time in my "fireterd" to replace the fuel pump. It seems like It was just a metal-to-metal crimp that held the filler neck in place. I used to noticed a fuel smell just after a new tank of gas. There were no visible leaks and the smell would go away quickly. I simply used some "right stuff" around the neck as it entered into the tank. It is similar to caulking, but is leak proof and chemical proof, etc. I swear by this stuff, and it has held up ever since. Simple 1 minute fix if you have to replace a fuel pump. Otherwise....
