3rg gen TA vert?
i went to a buddies house and in his driveway is a red, two-seater, (roadster style, speedhumps behind the seat) Trans Am convertible.. needs a new top and it has a running 305 auto, nice straight body.. but did GM make TA verts in mid 80's.. hes not sure what year it is, it was his dads, and his dad passed away and gave it to his brother.. he says it around 86-89.. its carb'd and he only wants 500 bucks for it.. but i wont buy it unless GM made it, i dont want an aftermarket job.. any help is appreciated:lala:

ya its a Aftermarkit job.
GM didnt make Drop tops Birds tell 91 all tho thay started making drop top Camaros in 87......Dont see why thay wait so long with The Firebird but oh well .....
Anyways Id stell buy the car if it Runs 500 bucks is a really good deal and i bet if you cleaned it up and slaped a Nices paint job on it you could sell it to some one for 4grand.
Might have Troble Find some one to do the Top tho but i Stell think the car is worth it

I have one
It is worth a lot more than 500 dollars. The top could be a problem but if it is all there, you can get it re done. Mine has 14,500 actual miles on it and turns more heads than a vette! It has a 305 TPI engine also. I don't think a factory firebird/TA convertible was done until about 1991. Mine was a conversion by the same company as the car you are talking about. They are the only ones that did the bumps and the 2 seater roadster that I know of. The construction of the car, bracing etc., is really great.

ASC made GM approved convertible conversions.....
the camaros start in 87... i donno about the birds...
if its a ASC car, it will look factory. there will be a ASC sticker on the drivers door next to the regular stickers there.
take some pics and post them.
i can tell you right now, the "speedhump" tonnu cover would be aftermarket... but it could have been a ASC/"factory" conversion with the diffrent tonnu cover added later..

Mine was done by Autoform
They are no longer in business. I tried to find them but ended up with a deadend and did find out for sure they are no longer in business. There is a autoform but it is another company. They really did a great job. It is a convertible hardtop. So basically when you raise the top, you find that you have a complete headliner and the top is solid. It is braced enough that I have been told, you could actually sit on it. Not that I will try. I don't think that would be good for the hinge setup. It raises and lowers with very little effort with a weight system. I am actually very pleased. Their brochures are impressive as it shows the skeleton framework of extra bracing that they do.
So in answer to your question. You can't have one built. You might find a used one somewhere. I saw a couple go through ebay recently. One was a steal in my opinion. It had 56k miles on it, was red, original owner and sold for I think 5,200 or 5,600. Can't remember. It no doubt wasn't as clean as mine but still a nice looking car. They claimed it was 1 of 200 built if memory serves me right. The other one didn't sell but it claimed to be 1 of 100 built. (both by Autoform) I am going to uncover mine in a few minutes and go for a ride.

Here is a photo of my '85 T/A. This was taken a while ago and is a bad photo. It looks much better when you see it in person. This is the one I just said was done by Autoform out of Indianna. (no longer in business)

I don't have one
I took this one a while ago. I will take some better ones after I get it out again and spiffed up. The top is actually convertible top material. Looks totally like a regular convertible. It is sorta the best of both worlds. It snaps to the body after you raise it. It is also quieter than a regular convertible to me. The only way you know about the hard top part is when you hit the top of the car and find it is solid. I posted new photos on the forum '86 convertible on ebay.

Buy it!!! Not only does that car look awesome, but you can turn around and sell it the next day and get at least double that.

Car: projects.......
I've got an 89 ASC done GTA, and I've owned a 89 ASC done camaro. As far as I know ASC built the convertibles FOR GM until like 90 or 91. I've done a lot of research on this because of owning 2. - both of mine are soft tops.(the camaro is a RS 305 car that is now my grandmother's) - I have been dying to come up w/ that "speed bump" tonneau as everyone seems to call it. I've already axed my rear seats, and would love to have that solid toneau. I've been contemplating bulding one, but would much rather buy one. - I'll have to mod it to close around my roll cage, but I think it would look sweet on the car. - anyone know anything about finding one?...
later, justin...
