What is the purpose of clearcoat on Rims???

Hey guys,
I have 92 RS 16" Rims on the way in the mail, and I am probably going to rid them of the clearcoat before putting them on. But before I do, I am wondering if there are any negative aspects due to removing clearcoat? Will the rims deteriorate in any way shape or form? Will they lose the shine? SHould I just leave the clearcoat on? I think the rims are in good shape anyway. Thanks.

Clearcoat is on the rim to protect the aluminum and keep the shine. If you remove the Clearcoat then you will have to constantly polish the rim to keep the shine as the aluminum oxidizes.

On the wheels you are getting I would say leave it. My car had wheels someone tried to clean with brassO and the clear coat was pealing. So I striped the clear coat. It is easy as can be now to clean the wheels just spray acid on them and hose off. I use the duraGloss mag wheel cleaner, it is just really hydrocloric acid.

naw,
just take off that clearcoat. Talk to any guy at a show. No one has clearcoat on their wheels because the heat usually yellows it. All it takes is one good polish a season. Thats all you need, unless your extremely lazy, then yes the aluminum will corode slowly...

I have to agree. Aluminum is far more durable than steel. Sure it's going to wear over time, but with some careful maintnance you can avoid that.

Clearcoat makes your rims look like sh*t when it starts to break down, and there's NO way to make your rims look good when it gets to that point. They just start looking dull and parts of your wheel actually start looking corroded even though that's just a buildup where your clearcoat has peeled and bunched.

Unless the clearcoat is like new, I'd recommend stripping them.
