Ground Effects Swap

Hi people!
Has anyone here done a ground effects swap, or know how to take a set off the car? I've got my '84 Trans Am that I would like to put the '85-'90 style gfx on. How difficult is it? I hear that the nose and rear bumper covers are a pain in the butt. Anyone help me out?

Welp, on the camaro's it is pretty strait-forward. I just did the 91/92 swap on my car, it took a few new holes to complete but was pretty easy. There are 4 bolts when you open the door on the lower gfx, a bunch underneath the car, and the one that you have to remove the rear seat plastics to get to, then it's under a little rubber cover. It's a little GM cut-nut. The front and rear bumpers are pretty strait forward as well, just go slow and make sure you get all the bolts off. (And know where you put them! ) It should pretty much fall of the car when you got them all. The door pieces, you will have to take your inner door handles off and the door panels, then you will see the bolts for those, there should be around 5 of them. (counting the ones on the edges of the door) The only thing I am foggy on is how the T/A's attach on the front fender, the 85-90 camaro gfx uses screws under the emblems, where the 91/91 uses a pair of cut nuts that you have to take the fender well off to get to. Hope this helps and good luck!

The front & rear bumper covers are a PITA, but the work is worth it. Just make sure that you buy 85-90 headlight bezels. The 82-84 style won't work, the front bumper is slightly different in there. Then the next tough part is the bracket that needs welded onto the rocker panel for the side ground effect support to bolt onto. Buy new ones from Classic because IF you find used ones, you'll spend hours straightening them. Other than that the swap is pretty simple. Just take your time when drilling holes for the mounting brackets and you'll end up with a good looking install. Here's a pic of the headlight bezels I was talkin' 'bout.

The previous owner of my 82 swapped a full set of 85 gfx on. I'm gonna be taking them off and converting it back to the 82 gfx. If anyone is intersted in buying the whole set of 85 off me email me: slegers@nac.net All the pieces seem to be in good shape, I'll be able to tell more definatly once they are off the car.
