the tach and speedo needles have jumped up in this pic when the key is turned on. volts gauge is reading right, no oil pressure, gas tank is empty drained for pump swap, so the reading on that is correct, and the temp gauge is below 160, so reading is right on that too for a cold engine.

btw, my dash is half pulled apart right now, if you have questions on mounting the new dash or wiring 4th gen gauges in, now is the time to ask.

do the stock wiring harnesses mount up or did you have to replace all of them with the ones from 4th gen? also, does the 4th gen dash use the same mounting points as our 3rd gens? Any noticeable gaps anywhere. what about the A pillars? Using 3rd or 4th gen? Do u have pics of the entire dash installed? Please post pics! I am strongly considering the switch!!

That does look pretty sweet.

I second the tech article and more pictures especially a little further back.

Now some white faced guages and a new steering wheel might be the next project on the dash. but just a suggestion.:hail: :hail:

someone needs to make this a tech article

the VSS has two wires comming off it. one signal, one ground. (both wires will serve as either) attatch one wire of the vss to a ground point, and put the other wire in the signal port on the dakota digital speedo cal box. then on like output two, run a wire from there to the green / white stripe wire on your cluster harness. dakota digital box has to be ground and 12V+ so wire accordingly there.

don't be suprised if you have to change the senders for the coolant temp & oil pressure to get the guages working properly.

was at the speed shop today and saw a 200MPH overlay for 4th gen guages. salesman said the cluster electronics needed to be altered to get it working properly though.

I cant wait to do my 4th gen dash swap! Once you get that 150mph speedo in there, you should pick this up:

Buy it now for $45 on eBay

nope, they both work just fine. same part number from autozone for CTS for L98 and LT1, same thing on the oil pressure.

Instead of getting the 150mph dash you should get the 200mph I seen it in a newer super chevy mag. They are like direct replacements. But they are for 97 and up F-bodys, oh they're by www.GranatelliMotorSports.com that what the ad says. I m not sure what year you yanked it out of though, but a 200 speedo would rock, sure would be fun to test it out too

I've never seen em for anything but 4th Gen LT1 Camaros, but then again, I've never looked for other types. I dont recall seeing a 3rd gen set. Search eBay, I'm sure you'll find something.

What about the odometer? It's in a different place. Do you have the correct mileage on the odometer? Is it from your car or is it the one from the 4th gen? If it's from the 4th, how did you get the right mileage?

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not sure how that exactly works.

This is what you do when switching to a new speedo

The law requires that you set the odometer to where it originaly is,

OR

Set the new ODometer to zero and put a sticker in the drivers side door jam saying that the speedo was changed at xx,xxx miles.

wtf. no it doesnt. thats why my title says exempt on the milage part yes the odometer works, no its not set with the cars milage, its the 3rd motor in the cars life so it doesnt really mean much. i remember how many miles are on the engine that is in there now.

I am assuming that I will have a little more work to do to get a 4th gen instrument cluster working in my car if/when I get the dash in because I have an '83. What year is yours? What changes will be needed to get the cluster to work in mine?

I could be wrong, but for some reason, I am inclined to believe that the following for 4th gens is not a prolific as that for third gens. This is just a personal observation.

Dunno about that, seesm to me its more popular to have a 4th gen then a thirdgen, either way i made a post here about my findings on gm's tech site, answered all my questions, and if need be i can look up the wiring diagram for any other 4th gen....acess to gm is a great tool sometimes!

while fourth gens are popular for the go fast stock don't modify a thing crowd I prefer the third gen like the way it looks better. milage, model year, sticker price, number of cupholders all that **** means nothing to me when I was little the thirdgens were new and all the rage I told myself that I would own one someday I wouldn't trade it for a thing in the world not even an ls1 6-speed new maro i love the thirdgen so much more its a cult following thing you got it or you don't

I think the solution here would be to purchase the chiltons manual for the year car the guage cluster came off. Then compare the wiring diagram from the 4th gen manual to the 3rd gen one and start crimping. Thats how I plan to do mine when I do the swap (just to make sure I do it right).

I have a 4th gen chiltons (for working on the ss's) but i quite literally couldnt find the wirrign for the guages for 97-up dash's.
Gm pulled through though! Liek i said, if anybody needs any other yr or is wonderign, i can look it up or send you a copy of the page via aim or email.

I have in my hand the connector that plugs into the 4th gen cluster. I was matching up the colors to the diagram listed above and for some reason, some things dont match up. first, is there going to be a lot of wires left unconnected on the 4th gen plug, second, red wire on the 3rd gen dash needs to be splied into the pink/black wire. I do not have a pink/black wire. This would be a pink wire with a black stripe right.what have you guys come up with that did this already. also what about the other switches like the headlights and heater. These are the wires I have
