Hatch Pulldown Motor AND asembly

I finally got around to looking at my hatch pulldown motor to figure out why it doesnt work. When it is plugged in it does not do anything, not a sound. I pulled it off the car I saw that the white/yellow plastic peice that the motor assembly mounts to was broken. Is there anyone who sells the whole deal. I searched and all I found were links to just the motor or rebuild kits. I need the whole thing so that I can just bolt a new one in and be set. Now who sells these new? I am not having any luck with salvage yards here, none of them seem to have the part.

try talking to Lon Salgren (topdownsolutions@yahoo.com) .
he sales different parts for the hatch, not sure if he has what you need, but you could check.

yeah, look up lonsal.. he sells the housings and they are reinforced with aluminum and epoxy so they won't break. I would recommend buying all the parts he sells (housing, gear nut, and guides). Good luck.

Yes, I stock the parts to repair your 86-87 & 88-91 hatch pull-down units. But I am also gearing up to offer repaired and re-manufactured hatch pull-down units. Both would come with a warranty (6-mo. for repaired and 1-yr. for re-manufactured units). The units are disassembled, frames and latch assys are degreased, masked and glass bead-blasted, solvent washed, painted and latch mechanisms re-greased. Wiring, motors and switches are tested and refurbished or replaced. The units are then re-assembled with new TDS nylon guides, reinforced motor housings and new gear nuts. Re-manufactured units also get a new motor (improved design). Pricing hasn't been finalized yet, but it will be around $84.50 for a repaired unit and $145 for the re-manufactured units. There would also be an additional $30 core charge. The core charge is refunded when your old repairable unit is returned (using the enclosed postage-paid return label). I expect to have the program in place by early August. As always, e-mail me at: topdownsolutions@yahoo.com for a Price List or further info. Lon

Lonsal or anyone else, you said through 1991 model year? I have a 1992 RS, is there something specific on that model year that isn't on the rest?

Yep, the design changed. GM calls the 86-91 Their "first design" but in fact the 86-87 & 88-91 have minor differences. The "second" design is completly different. It has a plastic molded frame and a square loop that latches to it, rather than the rounded one similar to a U-bolt. The only part that carried over was the gear nut. I haven't yet been able to buy a 92 hatch pull down in order to make the guides for it. I have one on order, but it will be a while before I see it (the car has to be parted out yet). If the motor was disconnected, then more than likely it is the gear nut that is bad. The reason why you should suspect the gear nut is; if the gear nut goes bad, the motor will continuously run, but it won't move the latch portion up/dn. A common band-aid fix is to pull the connector to the motor to stop if from running. Lon

I plugged the connector back in, but it still didn't make any noise so I am gonna have to test the wiring for it too. Why would GM change the motor for the last year? That is not too smart. So now I have to find a 92 Camaro to get the part off of.

Check with GM. The motor housing is probably still available (just as it is for the first design). Sorry I don't have a p/n for it, since my Camaro Parts & Illustration catalog only covers the 1982-91 model years. Call Dal at Vandevere Inc. (800)362-9494. I will have items available eventually. It's just a matter of how soon I get a sample to work from. Lon

Buy the lastest issue of High Performance Pontiac.

It has a great article on how to fix them cheap, and forever.

The pontiac place here had the plastic house it is $12-15 they also can get the whole assembly you don't want to know the price, close your eyes, $450 ouch. When I first got my car my pull down was bad, the motor was good though.

I fixed it up mostly. About 6 mo ago I started having dead battries all the time. It turned out the motor was not turning off when the hatch was closed, not spining but at max tourq, it would kill my batt in 13 hr. It took me forever to figure it out, i even took it to the pontiac place, they couldn't figure it out. So I just happen to here it click one day and it gave itself away.

I went to pullapart junkyard, its a get your own part place here in georgia, pullapartjunkyard.com and got two mostly complete pulldowns, between my orginal and the two from the J-Yard I had it fixed for $20.
