no.. no state is it illeagal to drive without a hood.. its just not great for your engine... the hood isnt an enviromental device cause everything goes out the bottom anyway & it isnt a saftey device... so drive w/o the hood.. just dont let water in your engine...park it outta the rain & your fine..

I'm not sure, I've heard you can get pulled over, but unless you've got a pro street car or something with a motor you can't even fit under a hood, why they hell would you want to run without one? It just screams white trash hillbilly.
#5
lol this reminds me of something, some guy was driving around with no hood, and he got pulled over. I assume he was told to have a covering over the engine, so the next day I see him driving around, with ducktape stuck every which way across the engine campartment to make a hood....
#6
it is a safety device... it's designed to absord a lot of the impact (that's why it folds up in any accident).
driving without one is 1) not as safe as driving WITH one , and 2) pretty white-trash like , lol

I drove without my hood for about a week, back in '95... I had an accident, and was doing bodywork, and realized my hood hinge was too bent to get back on the car. So I drove without a hood... and wouldn't ya know it, as I was driving to pick up a $100 hood, I was half a mile from the kid's house, and got pulled over. No ticket, the guy just told me that he'd better not see me without a hood on again.
I hear it's a safety thing- but not for the person inside the car... for people "near" the car. Otherwise, a belt could fly out, the hot radiator could burst on someone, or the engine could backfire.. silly stuff like that.
Let me tell you though, it made for one HELL of a ram-air!!! I've never felt anythign as powerful as having that throttle body (port fuel injection) facing the open air! And I still can't believe I drove like that without a filter. Geez, I must've been insane.

Your best bet is to call the Highway Patrol and ask them. Seriously, I think they'd be the best group to ask - not a bunch of goobs (myself included) on the internet; especially if fines and stuff are involved.
However, as a side note, I drove my car from Virginia Beach down to Mid-North Carolina (about a three hour drive) hoodless. I was going to pick up a second one (for "mods") and I couldn't think of any other way to get it. So, I took mine off, drove down there, bolted the new one on and drove back. Passed several troopers without getting a ticket; your mileage may vary.

I got pulled over without a Hood and Asked the Cop if it was Illegal, and he said No It was Not.
He was pulling me over for the way I was driving
That was in California.
Only reason I didnt have a hood on cause I just put the engine Back In and was test driving it.

i drove my car around for about a month with no hood on while i was saving cash for a new one and i passed many local and state police who never even gave me a second glance. but that is here in ohio.
BTW i do have a ****** haircut and have been known to wear my van halen shirt occasionally lmao. but i think an REO Speed Wagon shirt would give a little more white trashiness to the scene lol.

I'm with Steve. Ask you local PD.
I drove my car hoodless to Fl from Ga when I went to p/u my hood from Suncoast. People looked at me odd, but the cops didn't seem to car. We did tape down some cardboard since it always rains in FL. So I drove with a cardboard hood. The people in Orlando really gave us some odd looks.

Be careful with no hood. When I dropped my engine in the hood wouldn't fit with an air cleaner on the engine so I drove it for awhile with no hood. I guess a little water got down the carburetor and I ended up with a bent rod and a cracked block in my engine that I just had built. I thought I was going to cry.

I was just thinking about what TomP said about a belt could fly off or a radiator could burst . It would be so damn funny if you saw a car parked are going down the road and the belt broke and flew way up in the air :sillylol: :sillylol: :sillylol: If I didnt have a hood and I was sitting at a light or something and the belt flew off and came back down and landed on my windshield , id prabably turn my wipers on to flick it off :sillylol: :sillylol:. No I really wouldn't flick it in the road ! It'd be funny if there was a car on the side of me with a cute girl in it :sillylol: :sillylol: ...I know its prabably not funny to you guys , but some of the stupidist stuff to me is funny !

Hehe, that was fun...bungee cords, package tape, stopping way too often to retape the seams (she neglected to mention that this trip started late at night, and lasted til dawn when we hit Orlando). Somehow it held up til we got to Suncoast, though. They probably thought we were nuts! Nice guys though, they let us install the new hood inside so we wouldn't get wet (it started raining while we were there). That trip was a real adventure!

I drove around without a hood on my car for the initial run-in period so I could look for any major problems.
I wouldn't want to do that on a long-distance drive or anything like that.
I live way out in the country on the Ohio/Penn state line, very few cops out here. We can get away with no hoods, mufflers, etc. Hence why my sidepipes are staying on until this winter, despite the fact that I hate them.
I'm with Steve and Shannon(redraif?) here, check with your state highway patrol.
My hood is rotting away, so until I replace it with a fiberglass replacement, I just had a hole cut in my hood so I can at least drive with a hood on. It looks like hell, but it will avoid any potential tickets.

Bill, I've got a picture of my parts car without the doors, that thing was weird to sit in. Looked like I could drive that way, too... I think I was a little short on ***** that day, otherwise, I would've given it a shot! I mean, think about it for real; why would it be okay for a Jeep to be on the road without doors, but not okay for any other car? (Besides the fact that our cars would twist in half if the door was missing because of the structural aspect, but hey...)
