Oh, it fits, it just doesn't fit unless you do some modifications. Thing is, they should say "doesnt fit 85-up Firebirds". In 85, the Firebirds (incl TA & Formula) lost the all-plastic, box-shaped, black center console. They got the vinyl-sided console with the single-piece console top and longer armrest. There are no screwholes for a shift plate. The older Firebird consoles and all the Camaro consoles have screws for a shift plate, so the Megashifter plate "fits"- it screws in, no cutting necessary.
I had to cut my console top with a cutting tip on a gun-style soldering iron. I used the new shift plate as a template. I used an old hand drill to drill the holes for the four shift plate screws, and gently put the screws in (so I wouldn't strip the plastic). The plate fit exactly; right at the top of my power window switches, and right below the ashtray lid button.

a 4th gen firebird/ta console is a direct bolt in for an 85 up bird. I'd be willing to bet it would be really easy to fit a megashifter in a T56 console.
