Interior custimization....need ideas for schemes, dyes, etc..
I was thinking of a few ideas of doing a complete customization of my interior. Being that I've nick-named my car 'El Diablo' (red exterior), I was thinking of re-doing the interior w/ a red and black scheme. I dont want to go overboard w/ the red, so I was wondering what I could possibly paint red in my interior. Right now the interior is the standard light grey color. I figured a red dash might be too much, and I don't want red carpet...so I was figuring I'd just do some of the plastic trim pieces here and there in red, and the rest in black? Black headliner, black carpet, black dash, black console. Anyone w/ a cuztomized interior please post pics so I can get some ideas of what to paint red and what to paint black.
Also, instead of using paint, would it be easier to dye all the interior plastic pieces?? How well does the dye hold up? (Figure i'd throw a few coats of clear coat on top anyways). What type of dyes are recommended??
TIA, and please give feedback and pics

omni...any reason you have the hammer handle on upside-down??
other than that, i think the interior looks great... just repaint the door handle plates like igotslicksNchix said and it'd be perfect

My handle is busted essentially. The thread in the handle is stripped. It serves its function as a handle, it just spins on its axis. I've just not purchased a new one yet. That one is going to end up a rear view mirror ornament.

I agree with igotslicksNchix, paint the door handle frame black again and your interior will be much better, not overdone at all.
Nice car, BTW

well I know its NOT red, but if you use a little imagination you can see that it would work in red. I like Yello tho... dunno why...

Omni,
I think the interior looks pretty cool, I like the red scheme to me it seems a little over done just cause the seats are a duller red. if they matched the red paint then it would be just fine but what can ya do ? Are those tailor made 4th gen seats, or did they come out of a red 4th gen camaro? I'd like that scheme with teal.

okfoz. I always love seeing pictures of your interior. That is a sweet interior! Just makes me want to get 4th gen firebird seats that much more and get rid of my 4th gen camaro.... What is
the deal with those funky head rests? I have never seen those before?? :hail:

ok, get this:
My car is an 87 Formula, the seats I got from a parts car, (83 T/A) but the seats were originally from 87. They are the "Ultima" style commonly called GTA seats. The reason I know there from 87 is the pump for the lumbar & bolsters had a date stamp of 3-16-87.
The funniest part of the whole thing is, I got a TPI engine from an 83 Camaro that was from an 87 T/A.
Essentially everything that is factory is from 87... I think G0D is trying to tell me something...

okfoz,
Thats funny how everything ends up being 87. Weird actually. Heck I thought those were 4th gen firebird seats! Them are nice! I guess I didn't know they had lumbar and stuff for thirdgens... Interesting.. Well is that leather? I think When I decide what to do as far as style of seats I am going to have them recovered in Pleather or vinyl. Something thats more durable and cheaper then leather and doesn't show the stress marks. I hate that about leather.. HOw much did it cost to have the seats custom sewed and embriodery and everything along with the door panels??? I am guessing about $1500=$2000?
Thanks!

I'm also going with a red and black scheme...just not as I had previously planned. I picked up a set of black leather seats from a 4th gen and done some "other" things....look forward to a full posting on it soon. Probably this Saturday.
and okfoz...thanks a ton for helping me a while back. Your diagrams helped me decide what I wanted to do with my interior...even though I changed plans. Your help was much appreciated.:lala:

hey guys whaddaya think of this scheme?
i have an '87 Fomula WS6 (i also love okfoz's interior!) and i am going to paint it black with red Formula graphics. for the interior i found some third gen Camaro (84 Z28 to be exact) with the manual lumbar and all that good stuff. the pattern on them gave me an idea (the two tone with "Camaro" written all over). i thought of re-doin the seats in black/red and in each stripe stitchin in "Formula" the same way it is written on the car, black on the red and red on the black. do you guys think this with some red hints here and there on some of the plastic pieces would be overkill? oh, the seats are $70 for the set in decent shape.

I can't link to the pics anymore but check out my site and the interior pics , nothing too crazy , just some little minor changes.

Dash area:
I have painted my vent borders. I used touch up paint and hand painted them. No problems with any chipping. I had to do it fast and thick to avoid brush lines, but they came out well. I filled in the horn button and chaged the speaker grill cloth to red. I got a red and black steering wheel cover from wheelskins..it came out great. Ashtray and release button are red. I framed the power window buttons in red. And I painted the defrost vents on the sides of the dash pad.
Added some red neon string lights. They line the center console, radio console face plate and the top and botton of the dash face. I have to find a way to get them less orange looking. Transparent Candy apple red paint did not work, it would not dry.

The rear cargo area. I added nauga soft to the grey panels and trimmed them in red piping. I hope to get my seats recovered in black leather and piped in red to match.
You can also see I added red to the subs with red speaker grill cloth
