Replacing carpet, need help....

I was wondering if anyone knows where to buy carpet for a 92 bird, because I would like to replace mine. Any idea on how much it would cost? Also, would it be hard for me to put in myself? What all would I have to do, what tools, etc.

I just put ACC Carpet in mine from www.1aautomotive.com and the pics are in the link. You'll here from others that this is just the best carpet ever...

Heres a little secret, 1aautomotive sells the whole kit on ebay fro a buy it now price of $199.95 plus shipping. You can get the console cut out or not. Pic your color and they custom make it for you!!!!!!!!! If ya look on there site, they charge $230 for the kit on there, might as well save ya $30...

I paid $217 to buy it and have it shipped, and I just love the finish product!!!!!

When I did my carpet, I only did the passenger area; my cargo area carpet (behind the rear seat and in the hatch) is still in good shape. The passenger area carpet ran me $120 from 1aauto... which is pretty damned close to the same price as the crap from JC Whitney- If you're going to buy carpet, might as well buy it once for $20 more. Hell, JC might charge that much for shipping!

ud be surprise what u can find at the loacl junk yard. I had bought my carpet at a local pull and pay yard cost $20 for the carpet. Its in really good condition. I steam cleaned it ($10) and now its mint.

Installing the carpet is easy if all the interior is already out. Just lay it down.

I am switching to black, so thats why i bought the whole set. Also you'd be surprised at how well this carpet is made. If you set stock and the ACC side by side you'll see the difference, just in the materials alone

They HAND make them to your order!

Besides finding good carpet in a boneyard is hard to do, most of it has "stuff growing on it"

I bought it too from them, and I have to say it didn't lay proper in rear seat area by feet and in between the seat's where the lump is between seats. It's okay, but I wasn't completely happy. But it is a lot of work to take all the stuff out and harder to put it back in correctly since carpet had no holes where seat belts, seat mounts and side pillar rails go in. Andy

I guess TomP bought the stuff from JC Whitney and compared the two which means he spent twice as much...NOT....so he's just talking out his A$$....the JC Whitney carpet is from Ohio Auto Mat and is excellent quality. I have also purchased items from 1AAuto and their stuff is good too. Cheap doesn't always mean cheap.

Thanks Stuart, but he's right. I didn't buy both brands. Actually, I did a ton of searches over the internet (including on thirdgen.org!) on carpet before I purchased it. I had planned on buying direct from ACC, who wants $160 for it. Few people were happy with Ohio, fewer were happy with Newark. Supposedly the carpets didn't fit well, "fuzz" easily, and fade. So I went with an authorized GM Reproduction Company. Is Ohio or Newark authorized? Why pay $100 for Ohio when you can get ACC for $120?

And 1A's carpet is ACC carpet. They sell ACC carpet, they don't make their own carpet. Have you heard of ACC before today?

Oh and 1991Formula350, you have to cut holes for all brands of carpet. Did you lay the carpet in the sun before installing it? Was the lump between the seats there before you made all the holes? I made one seat belt hole too "low" in the carpet, and it wound up bunching up the carpet behind the driver's seat. I just widened the hole I made by an inch, and the carpet went back to normal.

i bought mine from NOS reporductions in ottawa(i think0 ontario canada for $230 my cost, i changed the interior to black from ugly tan/brown whatever..it came cut for the console...all i needed to do was cut a bit off the sides(that goes under the inside panels and make new holes for where the seat nuts go..other then that it fit really really nice...pretty much just like the stock one did!!

iroc2nv

ps tools you may need

exacto knife(any fine tuning for carpet fit)
hex screwdriver(get the console out of the car)
torque set(take the rear seats out)
size 10 socket(front bolts)
black tar/sheet metal -(if you have holes in your floor now is a good time to cover them up with tar and metal)
i think thats it

i let mine lay in the sun for 3 hours until it went down and let it hang on the cloths line for another two. Me and a friend started the install at 9:30 at night. We were very carefull and thankfully made no mistakes.

Tom is right about the way you cut holes for the seats, seat belts, etc cuase if you cut wrong it will buldge up at another spot.

Mine was not fitting right arond the hump neither, but all it took to fix that was cutting the holes for the stumps around the bottom seat cushions. After i cut those holes, it all layes perfect now.

To solve the buldging of the front buldgine, i cut down the center and allowed it to overlap, the 4th gen console and Pod then push down on the carpet holding it still.

Only thing left is to trim the edges. Will have better pics later, but i am not home to have access to my digital camera.

wow guys, thanks for all the response. I was reading the link and what in the hell is 3M Scotchguard? Should I order some for the new carpet? Where can I get it? Also, are you supposed to let your carpet sit in the sun? For how long, and what is the purpose of that?

Scotchguard is a protectant that helps prevent stains and repells dirt in some cases to keep you carpet clean is all you need to know

Let it sit in the sun for at least an hour, this will let the carpet "relax" and all the creases from being in he box get out. This will allow it to go into the car much easier than doing it without the sun. I let mine sit in the sun for 3 hours just o be safe

I have better pictures of my finished install on my "Interior 2" page on webshots thats in my signiture below:

Year One's Next Generation Camaro and Firebird catalog has the passenger and rear compartment set for 249.00, or just the passenger set for 149.00. You can even get the deluxe more plush carpet, which is thicker and more durable than the regular kind.

What about that little bit of carpet that goes on the kick panels. Do any of these places offer a replacement for that? The kick panel carpet is what makes my interior feel old.

go to www.thepaddock.com , they should have an online catalog to download, if not buy one for $5 bucks, they sell pre-cut or the cheaper un-cut carpet to put on all the panels. Its supposed to be good, but i haven't ordered it yet, but I plan to...

Never mind, it's just my dirty mind working against the alcohol.
By the way, if anyone want's a threadbare, dirty and useless red carpet for their thirdgen I'll be replacing mine soon aswell. Will also be going for black I think. Black carpet, headliner, seats and door pods, and beige side panels, in a purple car. How does that sound?

My light grey ACC carpet has faded over the last 2 years and never really fit as good as I had hoped. Do I know of anything better? No, its all Ive tried but I was never really satisfied with it but it was acceptable. The fading doesnt make me happy though.

It certainly is. One of the reasons why I'm changing it. I have pics, but not on the computer yet. Gimme a few days, then check out www.camaro.batcave.net for all the "before" shots.

I used acc

I got it direct from ACC. Yea, I paid a little more, but I know it's fresh!

I also had some "bunching" in the rear footwells because I didn't get the seatbelt holes right on. I re-did it, and now it lies down nicely. It also helps to glue it down, like the factory does.

I originally had light grey, but it's a dirt magnet, so I went with Charcoal, a much darker grey. It makes the interior look so much better, matches the console and dash pretty well, and really emphasizes the seats and door panels. I took off the door panels and steam cleaned them with a rental carpet cleaner, and did my seats, too. They look sweet now. Sprayed them with the 3M Scotchguard in a can. I got it a Lowes.

So far, so good. Now about that peeling paint...
