its not that hard to change the column out. Take bottom panel off, unbolt it from the dash(has 4 bolts I think) Unbolt the plate on the firewall, and disconnect it from the steering shaft. Remember to unplug all the wires. On the airbag system, make sure the column is locked. If the wheel turns, it could mess up the wiring inside that goes to the airbag.
You would be better off changing the complete column, than to try to add cruise to it. It can be done, you just have to have a different switch, all the cruise control components. Im not sure if anything has to be changed in the computer.

the only thing different inside the steering column if the vehicle has factory speed control is the multifunction lever.
multifunction switch is a wear component. the tiny fragile wires inside the arm break off the switch contacts and the wires rub up against the steering column each time the turn signals are used. if cruise control isn't working, the multifunction switch is the culprit the majority of the time.
is time consuming to disassemble the column to install the new multifunction lever and run the cruise wires. but is probably a better choice than installing a used column if you plan on keeping the car for a while.
