If you mean rpo D42, rear compartment cargo cover, it appears to be available all years, except 82. So one would fit in you 86. My guess is they are interchangeble

Dont forget the mounting bracket that goes behind your plastic panels. The shade will have nothing to mount to. I wish I had taken pics when I welded them into place to better help.

yea the reason i want one is to hid my system. i have tint but you can still see through the tint and see the speakers so i would rather be able to hide them. thanks for the info guys. now i need to find one.

Hey 85SportCoupeto89RS, won't he also need the cover for the underside of the hatch that has the anchor for the free end, or did they all come with that?
All 3 of mine have had the shade, so I don't know if it was different for the ones without it.

Ok here is the thing. I took out my 88 interior which had the shade and i am putting it in my 86 interior. The panels that hold the shade there is a black clip thing on both sides mounted to the plastic but suported by metal brackets under the panels. Unless you are really good at cutting or have the brackets under your existing panels it will not work. The black clips have nothing to hold themselves to which will defet the purpose. I am going to figure out a way to have the clips stay in with out the brackets. That looks verry confusing.
What i'm saying if the car didn't have it it will be harder to install one without the factory bracket. But it will work. It is in my 86 now. I just screwed the screws into the plastic for the clips but it looks like $hit.

It was easy for me to put the brackets in to my 85. I used a chisel and hammer to get the brackets out of the firebird donor car then made a mental note at where the brackets were located in the bird then put them in the same place in my 85 and mig welded them in. Saywhut, I have no idea yet. I am waiting for my shade to come in, I only got to check out everything when my cousin had his 91 at my place. I just attached it to the two hooks in the cargo area and didnt check on the decklid part

Not completely sure that this will help, but I used a cargo cover from an '85 Camaro to replace the one in my old '88 Firebird, so if the brackets are in place, the shades should all be interchangeable.

i pulled the plastic hardware from the bone yards but i have no metal brackets to bolt them on to. Anybody know what i would expect to pay to have them welded on, i have no experience with welding nor do i know where to get one.
I just ordered my black decklid peice and it has the notches for the cargo cover, whoo hoo
I don't have a Cargo cover yet! But i got a dremel for Graduation, so i could cut holes for the hardware

This is a easy install Stuart.... I did it in my RS about 2 months ago... I got the metal mounting plates from Hawks for $25.
Then I just lined up the interior piece with the mount pads and
marked where they needed to be and drilled holes and pop
riveted them to the car...
Here is a picture...

I put a cargo cover in my 86 that didn't originally have one--but I did use donor plastic panels from a car that did. All I did was lay the round holders in the cutouts(in the long plastic interior panels)and they hold the cover fine. I do have the metal brackets from my donor car, but I haven't had time--as usual.
EDIT:
The tension of the springs in the cargo cover hold it in there nice and snug.
