Aftermarket gauge questions

Looking to purchase a new gauge setup. I noticed autometer includes sending units for oil and temperature gauges. Is the sending unit needed for 3rd gens or can the stock units be used. Reason I ask is because with the VDO gagues the sending unit has to be purchased sererately and that could save some money.

When I switched to all Autometers I originally didn't use their sending units and it worked fine.
